This position will perform the role of Systems Administrator and have responsibility for meeting the core information technology needs of the Center for Dairy Research (CDR) faculty, scientist, researchers and administration. This position will advise computer users regarding the specialized equipment, applications, operating systems, and hardware. This includes both laboratory equipment and the technology associated with it. This position will interact with a broad range of customers at a wide range of technical levels.

There is an expectation that this position will take the necessary steps to continue their education regarding technology developments and industry best practices related to the position, such as IT security and the ITIL and COBIT frameworks. CDR will provide ongoing training and certification opportunities.

60% Monitor the operations of the CDR Network. Resolve any hardware and software problems. Monitor the routine backup operations of the network, evaluate and implement network security measures appropriate for proprietary data (e.g. firewalls, domain policies, server certificates, anti-virus). The network monitoring and maintenance referred to includes the LAN and SAN systems that interconnect research instrumentation, computers, workstations, printers, and servers within the CDR and UW system. Manage the virtual server infrastructure (software, configuration, hardware, etc.). Lead centralization of application management (Digital image management system, Genesis, Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007, IBM/Domino applications, SaaS). Responsible for network infrastructure. Implement security policies and procedures for network and desktop usage. Control and implement backup plan, information archiving, and disaster recovery strategies. Monitor and maintain CDR's website and external information technology surface.

35% Provide consulting for CDR staff to meet research needs from a technical solutions standpoint. Identify the specific components that will satisfy the objectives of the solution to manage data flow of information. Responsible for work station administration and support (PC and MAC). Provide expert advice on desktops, laboratory data acquisition/control equipment, networking, specialized hardware, upgrades, and software as necessary to support CDR's activities. Investigate applicable hardware and software to meet the specialized research and industry needs. Make recommendations for upgrades and replacements, as necessary to meet project needs. Recommend and assist in implementing a wide variety of infrastructure changes for individual research groups. Participate in security issues in an ongoing and engaged manner. Install and configure new hardware and software-including troubleshooting and maintenance of existing installations. Assist in responsible network audits and penetration testing.

5% Consult with other computing support personnel and advise faculty, and staff about the development of short-and long-term plans for personal and group computing. Monitor the literature and appropriate newsgroups for virus and security reports, security risks, and software and hardware developments relevant to CDR. Serve as technical liaison with Food Science Department, other UW units, CDR affiliates, DoIt, and other computer services.
