The Amazon Hardware Operating System Engineering team, within the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Infrastructure group, provides the server platform for our innovative web service and e-commerce technology platforms. This platform is industry-leading in terms of frugality and operational excellence, and is critical to the success of the AWS business and the thousands of customers who use utility computing today.
The ideal candidate for the Server Tools Development Manager role within this team will be a strong leader, and an innovative self-starter with deep software development, Linux OS, and commodity hardware background and industry perspective. They will be intimately familiar with the cloud computing industry and the AWS offerings, passionate about providing the best possible customer experience, and embrace innovative and unorthodox solutions. This candidate will be highly organized, will have an obsession with data and precise analysis, and will use these as inputs to make decisions.
The Server Tools Development Manager is responsible for leading the team which builds software tools to enable Amazon to deploy diverse hardware platforms. This team works with our hardware engineering teams to build test automation frameworks and enable the introduction of new technology in our fleet. They work with our fleet automation team to develop a consistent API for hardware interaction and deliver telemetry to our analytics platform. The ideal candidate will be highly organized and data driven. They will have a passion for recruiting, leading, and developing world-class engineering talent and executing projects on aggressive timelines.

- The candidate will have a degree in the field of computer science and experience with Linux on x86 servers.
- The candidate will be versed in both the Software Development and Systems Engineering disciplines, and will be able to facilitate employee growth in both tracks.
- The candidate will be highly organized, versed in agile project management disciplines, and will have a proven record of executing in dynamic and fast paced environments.
- The candidate will have 2+ years of experience with developing software systems within large scale infrastructure environments.
- The candidate will have 5+ years of experience managing teams of people.
- The candidate will be proficient with the web services and cloud computing approaches to developing Internet technology.
- The candidate will make data driven decisions and have a bias for extensive measurement of the product and team. They will communicate ideas and concerns clearly and persuasively, in both verbal and written forms.
- The candidate will have the ability to "lead from the balcony" and build plans that stand the test of time.
- The candidate will work backwards from the needs of our customers and the desired quality of our product to identify and develop the right solutions.
- The candidate will have a bias for automation and building simple, repeatable processes.
