Definition
Under direction of an assigned supervisor, operate a computer-assisted writing laboratory and maintain equipment, materials and supplies; facilitate student learning by providing assistance to faculty and students; select, train and student workers in check-in/out processes and other laboratory procedures.

Assignment
80% of full-time, 30 hours per week, 11 months per year. Work location: West Valley College.

Salary and Benefits
• Anticipated Hiring Range: 3,408 – 3,553 monthly (Dependent upon experience).

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: Two years of experience in an instructional or instructional support capacity in the fields of writing, reading and/or basic skills.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:
• Operation and maintenance of an instructional laboratory.
• Basic principles of training and supervision.
• Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and composition.
• Record keeping methods.
• Oral and written communication skills.
• Interpersonal skills including tact, patience and courtesy.
• Operation of computers, peripheral equipment, office machines, and educational and business software.

Ability to:
• Operate and maintain a tutorial laboratory, offering instructional assistance in laboratory procedures and equipment.
• Operate, maintain and demonstrate the use of specialized equipment and software used to reinforce instruction.
• Provide instructional guidance and assistance to students in a laboratory environment at the community college level.
• Recruit, select, train and supervise student desk attendants and workers.
• Operate office machines, computers, peripheral equipment and a variety of software.
• Maintain records and prepare reports.
• Facilitate learning activities and opportunities for students.
• Prepare instructional materials for laboratory activities.
• Maintain a clean and orderly laboratory environment.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide instructional guidance and assistance to individuals and small groups of students in computers and peripheral equipment.
• In collaboration with the English department faculty help create assessment tools and rationales to track the effectiveness of services; administer assessments; analyze, record and make recommendations in accordance with assessment outcomes.
• Recruit, select, train and supervise student desk attendants and workers; schedule laboratory activities and tutoring sessions to ensure optimal use of the laboratory; assign students to tutors and respond to questions and complaints regarding laboratory services. * Provide orientation to the tutorial laboratory for students, tutors and instructors; explain policies and procedures and promote program activities.
• Prepare and maintain a variety of records, logs and files related to student and tutor payrolls, laboratory use statistics, purchases, budget, and equipment and supplies inventory.
• Maintain a clean and safe learning environment in the laboratory; install printers and keyboards; maintain equipment and schedule repairs as needed.
• Order, receive, store and inventory equipment, supplies and materials for laboratory use; prepare, issue and distribute instructional materials.
• Communicate with instructors, vendors and suppliers regarding laboratory purchases, operations and equipment; respond to questions from students and others to promote and publicize laboratory services.
• Research information regarding the price and availability of materials and equipment for the laboratory, and make purchase recommendations as requested.
• Operate a computer-assisted writing laboratory to facilitate student learning in correct English usage and the operation of computer hardware and software.
• Set up, operate and demonstrate the use of equipment including desktop computers, printers, instructional software, and audio-visual equipment; assist students in using instructional software; schedule and arrange for equipment repairs.
• Purchase, install, operate and maintain instructional software; duplicate, issue and inventory instructional materials and study aids for use by students, staff and instructors using the laboratory.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions
Duties are primarily performed in an instructional laboratory environment. Incumbents are subject to noise from equipment operation. The working conditions described here are representative of those an individual encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Physical Demands
Duties require the physical ability to see clearly to operate or transport equipment and to provide information to students and staff, hear and understand voices over telephone and in person, sit or stand for long periods of time, walk and move equipment, use hands and fingers to handle or manipulate assigned equipment, reach with hands and arms, move among students in the laboratory, move and transport instructional materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
