Job Description:
We are looking for an experienced Claims Adjuster to handle general liability claims in the 5 boroughs. While our office is stationed in Melville, NY, this is not solely a desk adjusters job. The position requires you to handle a pending of claim files and you perform your own field investigations( must have own car). Our office is a TPA who handles a large habitational book of business for a major insurance carrier. We have been in existence more than 10 years.
Duties:
- Examines insurance policies for applicable coverage, prepare coverage analysis and coverage position letters
- Investigate accidents by performing timely telephone and field investigations, obtain recorded or written statements of insureds, claimants and witnesses, obtain scene photographs, perform internet searches for relevant data, ISO searches, weather records, building department records, submits FOIL requests.
- Evaluate medical records to determine extent of injuries and recommend claim reserves
- Must have good knowledge of legal principles in New York Law and the legal process in general. Must know negligence law and have general knowledge of Workers Compensation, labor law, product liability, auto liability and recovery.
- Manage litigation, direct counsel, review legal bills for compliance with litigation billing guidelines
- Must be able to analyze contracts( leases and construction contracts) to evaluate risk transfer opportunities and be able to write effective tender letters.
- Negotiate settlements with attorneys, claimants and other insurance carriers. Attend mediations or arbitrations, submit intercompany arbitration applications or responses to arbitration.
Skills/Qualifications
Candidate must be a go getter and be a hard worker willing to think outside of the box. Candidate must be willing to put in the time necessary to get the job done. Must have own reliable car for field investigations and be willing to use public transportation in 5 boroughs if needed. Must have NYS independent adjusters license or pass licensing exam and criminal background check. Must have general knowledge of building construction. Must have medical knowledge to understand orthopedic injuries claimed and values associated with them. Must be well spoken, have strong interpersonal skills and be able to control injured claimants and communicate with attorneys to obtain desired results. Must have good computer/technical skills, efficient typing skills for file note entry and be familiar with Microsoft word, use of the internet, digital cameras, saving and posting pictures to computer, e-mailing documents, posting attachments, scanning documents. Must have good writing skills ! Bilingual adjuster would be a plus
