Intellectual Property Specialist Position Summary: The Intellectual Property Specialist supports the identification, protection and management of corporate intellectual property assets by conducting literature and patent reviews, preparing invention disclosures and patent applications, working with the technical and legal staff to assure that new inventions are tracked and documented and generally assisting the company to protect and monetize its intellectual property. Duties and Responsibilities: The essential duties and responsibilities regularly performed and normally assigned to this position are as follows: · Supports technology development by consolidating technical information from various internal and external sources, identifying relevant material based on technical content, consolidating information for review and analysis by technology leadership. · Interview inventors to document and describe the scope of inventions. Work with inventors to add detail and to high-level concepts and define necessary experimental support. · Prepare formal invention disclosure documents and patent applications. · Provide assistance in the analysis of patents. Present summaries to technical leadership and Counsel, as required. · Assist in creating and defining patent drawings, illustrations, diagrams or charts as required. Assist legal team in filing patents and other documentation. · Work with internal clients to pursue non-disclosure and/or confidentiality agreements for all external parties, as required, and provide internal training to assist all company personnel to protect intellectual property. · Technical support for the development and management of patent and/or alternative IP protection strategies. Create and maintain necessary databases and/or archives tracking the intellectual property portfolio and technical documentation. Requirements : · Strong engineering or basic science background. Basic understanding of engineering fundamentals and USPTO laws. · Experience with coal combustion or related industry preferred. · Ability to work with engineers and inventors to develop detailed documentation of inventions. · Ability to interpret both technical and legal documents and communicate to technical and legal staff · Excellent attention to detail. · Able to communicate information clearly and concisely. Education, Certificates and Licenses: · Bachelor?s level degree in Engineering or Science (Mechanical / Chemical focus preferred). · Coursework or work experience with US or foreign patent office (USPTO) administration and drafting patent claims . · Paralegal certificate or law degree focusing on intellectual property matters helpful but not required. Experience: · At least Four (4) years of engineering research and development experience. · Electrical power, chemical process or utility industry/power plant experience a plus. · Coursework or experience with patent law (USPTO). · Experience reviewing and preparing patent applications.
