International Tax Senior Associate Job in Bethesda 20814, Maryland US

As a Senior on our Specialized Tax Services-International Team, you will apply your industry knowledge and experience as you work on clients of the Firm to assist in advising them of tax implications of their business objectives, recommend alternate courses of action, as well as identify different methods of complying with tax regulations. You may be responsible for teaching, instructing and reviewing the work of those with less experience. Other typical responsibilities will include applying your knowledge to understand potential tax issues, evaluate and select alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, recognize and communicate potential risks, identify potential changes in the tax policy and apply new policies to tax compliance and assist in handling routine questions from federal or state agencies. You may be a member of the client contact team for complex questions and information.

Tax Controversy
Has a basic understanding of the ability to represent the client before any tax authority on contested issues as evidenced by:
-Ability to review assessment notices
-Awareness of client expectations regarding issues of controversy
-Ability to handle routine questions from federal or state agencies with assistance

Tax Methodology
Has working knowledge of the application of standards that guide effective and efficient delivery of quality services and products in the taxation field

Tax Compliance
Ensures that clients comply with all applicable authorities, while at the same time minimizing their tax and reporting burdens. Has a basic level of understanding of tax compliance as evidenced by:
-An in-depth knowledge of availability and filing requirements regarding client-related information
-An advanced knowledge of all forms used and/or those that may be used
-Ability to apply knowledge with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency
-Ability to use knowledge of preparation and issues to price services and sell related services
-Coordinates with CTS service team and establishes roles for client service team members
-Ensures tax engagement letters are adopted prior to engagement work commencing
-Seniors tax engagements
-Understands proper scoping and works with CTS team as appropriate to ensure engagement terms are adequate
-Conducts detailed review of T/R and other client supplied data and identifies basic, complex, and advanced issues throughout the engagement
-Communicates with client to gather pertinent information when applicable
-Identifies any issues that would have an impact on the company's financial reporting

Accounting for Income Taxes ' SFAS109
-Ability to review basic provisions

Tax-Related Software
Understands and uses tax-related software appropriate to one's responsibilities
-Uses tax research databases
-Uses Caseware, Go Systems, and other tax-related software
-Trains Associates how to use all current software tools

Research
Identifies when research is needed; frames issues to be researched; identifies sources of all reliable and relevant information including information tending to contradict preferred positions; accesses those sources and retrieves that information; analyzes facts and authorities; understands their weight; and reports on analysis.

-Knows Firm and professional standards for preparation of WTA and tax returns

ASC 740-10
Understands and applies Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48
-Applies ASC 740-10 and Firm policies, standards, and BDO TQM regarding them
-Helps others to learn and apply ASC 740-10 and Firm policies, standards, and BDO TQM regarding them
-Reviews tax provisions ' with an in depth knowledge of FAS 109 if applicable to practice work.
-Coordinates review of application of FAS 109 to foreign jurisdictions
-Proactively communicates with Assurance counterparts to timely plan tax accrual reviews

Tax Consulting
Recommends and implements methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients' current and future taxes.
-Considers the applicability of international tax consulting specialties for each client, conferring with CTS and STS personnel when appropriate
-Interprets existing and new law and client facts to maximize client benefits
-Identifies need for other expert resources, internal and external, to assist where necessary with controversy resolution
-Establishes relationship with counterparts from BDO Firms in relevant jurisdictions
-Understands workplans for tax consulting projects performed for one's clients
-Identifies financial reporting impact of any consulting engagement
-Ensures client service teams comply with Firm policy regarding written tax advice (WTA)
-Assists with the implementation of Firm tax strategies and TSI's
-Coordinates completion of any compliance/reporting requirements with client service team created through consulting engagement
-Provides effective assistance with exam support
-Assists in managing client expectations
-Communicates complex technical items to target audience so that relevant issues are clearly understood.

Tax Specialization
Has an in-depth understanding of the technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding one or more areas of taxation

-Understands how international impacts federal and SALT areas well enough to manage its services
-Involves and works with other Firm specialists and client service team when client and proposal work relates to areas in which the Firm has specialists
-Organizes and conducts effective internal CPE training sessions in the area of specialization
-Continues development in chosen area of international tax specialty
-Develops knowledge base of and personal network with professionals in selected foreign jurisdiction
-Identifies opportunities for tax alerts in areas of specialty and assists in drafting

Strategy Development
Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel by reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits
-Reviews studies of tax implications and offers client alternative courses of action
-Assists with research of potential tax strategies
-Assists with implementation of tax strategy
-Understands how to use Firm tax strategies
-Understands the documentation associated with tax strategies
-Identifies and leverages lessons learned on prior projects, and offers input on how to improve processes and methods
-Suggests marketing approaches for new ideas
-Discusses simple tax strategies with the client
-Collaborates with professional in foreign jurisdictions in developing cross-border strategies

Other duties as required

Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervision of associates and first year senior associates on all projects
Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments
Act as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates
Schedule and manage workload of associates and senior associates
Provide verbal and written performance feedback to associates and first year senior associates

4 years prior work experience

License/Certifications:
