Job Details:

All the primary duties within this document will be performed according to established policies, procedures and guidelines within the department and the Medical Center.

JOB SUMMARY:

**Works under the direction of the Director for Clinical Resource Services to provide English to Spanish and Spanish to English language interpretation services a broad range of medical departments.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:

1. Provides age-specific interpreter services for Spanish-speaking patients/families in a variety of settings as assigned: inpatient services and outpatient settings, LD, ED, Rehab, Oaks, Radiology, etc.

2. Interprets information pertaining to the patient's hospitalization including but not limited to: advanced directives, consents for treatment, diagnosis and prognosis, treatment plan, follow up appointments and health care education.

3. Accurately and completely transmits the content and spirit of the original message into the other language, without omitting, modifying, condensing or adding.

4. Respects the patient's physical privacy and maintains spatial/visual privacy of patient, as necessary.

5. Directs all communications to the patient's social intellectual level and age -specific developmental level.

6. Assist patients with phone calls and makes appointments as required for follow up care.

7. Provides information regarding community resources to meet patient needs.

8. Assists care givers in understanding cultural differences/challenges and provides support for patient's spiritual beliefs.

9. Assists with discharge of patients. Ensures that patient has had all discharge instructions. Transmits nursing discharge instructions by writing them in Spanish on the discharge instruction sheet as directed by nursing. Takes patient via wheelchair to patient discharge area.

10. Maintains accurate daily records on all requests for services as well as the provision of services

11. Makes recommendations for Spanish language printed or audio/visual materials for patient education or patient diversion.

12. Completes a variety of department specific tasks to assist with optimal department safety and functioning.

13. Appropriately communicates information in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.

14. Organizes and performs work effectively and efficiently.

15. Maintains patient confidentiality.

16. Maintains and adjust schedule to enhance team performance.

17. Demonstrates a daily commitment to the values of the department.

18. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations in dealing with all members of the team

19. Maintains and promotes customer satisfaction.

20. Effectively demonstrates the mission, vision, and values of the medical center on a daily basis.

21. Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

1. Education: One year of experience interpreting Spanish in a clinic or hospital setting. Formal interpretation training strongly preferred.

2. Licensure /Certifications: Current certification or enrollment in an accredited NA training program by the North Carolina Board of Nursing or LPN license preferred but not required.

3. Experience: Must be completely fluent in grammatically correct Spanish and grammatically correct English, with the understanding of the vernacular in Spanish. Able to write in both languages with correct grammar and spelling. Must have sound knowledge of medical terminology in both languages. Must have thorough knowledge of cultural and social differences.

4. Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Ability to speak clearly for patient communication. Dexterity to operate a push button phone and pager.

5. Interpersonal Skills: Ability to convey, while providing interpreter services, the exact message as opposed to summarizing information; ability to provide a non-threatening presentation to patients and families; ability to work as a team member with a variety of different departments. Ability to interact positively with patients, patients' families, physicians and staff so as to promote positive patient care

6. Essential Physical Requirements: Able to use proper body mechanics to lift at least 25 pounds. Able to mobilize self to all areas of the medical center.

7. Essential Mental Abilities: Ability to maintain visual attention and mental concentration for accurate interpretation of information; ability to accurately assess receiver's facial expressions and body language; ability to closely listen to speaker of both languages and remain acutely aware of non verbal clues that could signal misunderstanding or emotional responses such as fear or denial.

8. Essential Sensory Requirements: Speech, visual and hearing ability. Ability to follow detailed and diverse instructions for interpreting for patients. Requires long and short-term memory. Ability to visually assess patients, utilize sight for documenting. Utilize hearing to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians, and staff

9. Exposure to Hazards: Exposure to blood and body fluids, infectious diseases and occasional exposure to chemotherapy and/or radiation.

10. Other - Hours of Work: Usually day or evening hours depending upon patient needs.
