We are seeking an uncommon professional to join our team as a Staff Underwriter

Job Responsibilities

Designated technical expert on specific area. Develop areas of expertise and take initiative to develop and contribute knowledge and skills to enhance the teams ability to serve customers. Provide mentoring and consulting, answering any questions that may be received from the team underwriters, customers or underwriting support staff which may involve formal and informal training. Acts as a role model by displaying positive team behaviors, core and leadership competencies and underwriting professionalism.

Develop underwriting policy and guidelines for assigned portfolio of insurance products. Work with risk management and line underwriting to ensure understanding of and compliance with all relevant underwriting levels of authority, policies, and tools of the assigned product line.

Drive underwriting projects forward and assist with training to promote underwriting excellence. Work with line underwriting to ensure metrics align with business objectives for the assigned product line.

Determine impact of enacted laws, regulations and other regulatory agency action on the assigned products. Provide compliance advice to underwriting to comply with the new laws and regulations.

Develop legally sound contracts and related forms for assigned products that maintain profitability, pricing objectives, and compliance with applicable legislative and regulatory requirements. Create and maintain the templates and establish variables and rules for other types of documents that impact the coverage.

Review exceptions and/or develop new language that complies with all applicable regulatory requirements. Engage underwriting and customer service units as necessary to develop appropriate solutions for any identified deficiencies in the documents or process.

Maintain and enhance underwriting skills and knowledge by pursuing learning and development opportunities through individual initiatives.

Work with the Rate and Form Filing unit to secure regulatory approvals and contribute to crafting persuasive responses to objections, as necessary. Accountable for maintaining coverages and policy forms that maintain profitability and pricing objectives for their line. Annually research, develop and file new coverages and policy forms.

Keep current on product area initiatives and serve as a resource/member on corporate, divisional and departmental project teams. Individually serve as a contact for risk assessment initiatives, problems and questions.

Develop/maintain tools which improve the communication of essential compliance information for the underwriting staff and other business units. Understand, monitor, and ensure that data collection and information sharing practices support corporate standards and comply with applicable laws.

Provide accurate, clear, credible, and relevant information via written and verbal communication. Follow corporate, compliance, privacy and confidentiality standards.

Ensure education and training provided to appropriate CMG staff when new products, coverages or underwriting procedures are developed.

Participate in professional associations, bureaus and credit union leagues, as appropriate for the position.

Conduct file audits to ensure compliance with underwriting authority, policies and procedures.

Job Requirements

1. Bachelor degree or equivalent trade off in related professional work experience.

2. Minimum three years of progressively responsible underwriting experience is required. Experience may include related areas such as compliance, claims, credit union or financial institution internal operations and financials.

3. Expert level of knowledge in operations of financial services companies and their influence on exposure to insured losses, including the implications for new products.

4. Demonstrated ability to communicate with internal and external customers.

5. Demonstrated excellent organizational, analytical, planning, interpersonal, creative problem solving, presentation, project management and team participation skills.

6. Computer skills required to maintain expertise in the use of various internal and external systems.

7. Demonstrated desire to continue professional growth/education and follow training expectations. Obtain designations and knowledge required.

8. Must exhibit values and competencies as expressed by the organization.
