Laboratory Technician Team Lead

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician Team Lead to perform tests and lead the team in our soon-to-be-open new laboratory in New Haven, CT. This is a full-time, benefited, day shift position with a Monday thru Friday work schedule. Hematology experience, including the reading of manual differentials, strongly preferred. The ideal candidate has broad general laboratory experience and great customer service skills, and is comfortable working with limited supervision.
 
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
· Interpret and report out on results
· Maintain a clean and safe work environment
· Participate in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation to improve lab performance
· Restock supplies as needed for each shift
· Perform multiple tasks with accuracy and speed
· Inform supervisor of workflow progress and discrepancies during shift
· Support lab personnel to achieve turnaround times (TATs)
· Assist clients as directed by supervisor
· Have knowledge of quality control guidelines, basic maintenance, and troubleshooting for department’s equipment
· Have knowledge of routine laboratory equipment and procedures
· Read, understand, and follow applicable standard operating procedures (SOPs)
· Prepare specimens for routine laboratory assays
· Be able to run all routine laboratory assays and analyses performed by department
· Fill all reagents needed and document quality control information for equipment used
· Prepare equipment for next shift (fill reagents, run controls, etc.)
· Document and report problems to supervisor
· Clean and stock supplies in work area
· Enter and track client sample and result information
· Perform minor machine maintenance procedures as directed
· Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and abnormal test results
· Work with laboratory team to ensure client turnaround times (TATs)
· Assist and train new technical staff
· Assist in development of new procedures and protocols to improve efficiency of department
· Act as resource for client inquiries
· Assist supervisor with schedule and staffing issues
· Understand and follow IDEXX laboratory safety procedures
· Understand and follow IDEXX quality control procedures
· Act as lead in the absence of supervisor
· Accurately enter assay results into client reports
· Basic understanding and following concepts of LEAN and 5S
· Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

 

EDUCATION:

·         Vet tech, MLT, MT, or bachelor’s degree preferred

·         National Certification preferred

 

EXPERIENCE:

·         Minimum 4 years experience preferred

·         Some laboratory experience highly desired

·         Data entry skills required

 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

·         Knowledge of GCP guidelines as appropriate

·         Strong oral and written communication skills

·         Strong attention to detail

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This job classification requires that the applicant be capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours, sitting, lifting up to 40 pounds, carrying up to 40 pounds, reaching, speaking, seeing, and hearing. This job classification also involves repetitive use of the hands, wrists, and arms. Applicants must be able to meet the minimum dexterity requirements of the position.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position involves a potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards. A complete list of such chemicals is available from the departmental supervisor.
