Lead Accountant

Hays are working with one of the leading NHS organisations in the East Midlands in the recruitment of a qualified accountant for a role that combines financial management support to the corporate service departments with a key role in the development and monitoring of the Cost Improvement programme for the whole organisation.

Finance roles in the NHS, particularly within the Acute (Hospitals) sector, are similar in many ways to positions within a large commercial sector based company as they require strong financial management, the development of excellent business partnering relationships with budget managers and a pro-active and innovative approach to cost reduction. The major difference between working in this environment and the commercial sector is that any cost savings that are achieved enable the continued output of valuable services to the public from a reduced budget rather than simply increasing the profit made for shareholders / company owners.

Despite all of the negative media comment we have seen very little evidence of compulsory redundancy within senior finance functions during the recent restructuring of the NHS and have actually seen an increase in both the number of finance roles available and the demand for more commercial candidates, as the NHS faces the challenge of dealing with increased service demands with a reduced budget. Finance salaries in the NHS remain amongst the highest in the public sector and, in addition to the increased feeling of social responsibility that comes with working in the NHS, employees also have access to an excellent average salary based pension scheme.

We are looking for a qualified accountant with experience of financial management and delivery of cost reduction in a large scale environment. If this sounds like you and you would be interested in exploring this new challenge we would be pleased to hear from you.
