LEAD ELECTRICAL ESTIMATOR, QUALITY FIRM
JOB OVERVIEW:
- Electrical contracting /electrical construction position
- Focus is commercial / institutional. Generally but not exclusively the work being estimated is occupied facilities (commercial and institutional examples of which may be healthcare, hospitality, university, municipal).
- Small department.
- EQ (emotional intelligence) in leadership (the boss is brilliant, reasonable, kind and blessed with common sense).
- Up to date tools (Accubid, heading towards paperless department)
THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOB:
This is a working manager’s position. We are looking for a lead that can evaluate a job (RFP, contract, technical issues), plan a process, develop a critical path schedule, make decisions about resource allocation and hit deadlines delivering the cost PLUS a win strategy. Given the size of the department, the lead will be hands-on estimating daily.
There is nothing mysterious about what the company does; it is a matter of experience, thoroughness and a better strategist as an estimating leader plus a strong field that defines our success. Estimating begins where it should. The job is quickly assessed for fit: Does the job make sense to pursue at all?
When a job is green-lighted for processing:
- Conceptual review and estimating plan
- Review for errors, omissions, design solidity, etc.
- Analyze risk
- Analyze scope (density issues, lift, special subs, rental, site/topology/geology)
- Produce take off plan (count / history / square foot)
- Establish cost
- Define bid day strategy (relationship, competitors, pricing strategy, service tail potential, annuity potential)
- Work with VP to put THE NUMBER on the job.
What defines excellence is planning, leadership, tactics, insight and striking the perfect balance.
Planning the work. Breaking the overall job into sections and establishing the critical path to process the work is a responsibility of the lead estimator. Drop-dead schedules for work sections must be established. The lead will do the bite-sizing of jobs at the point there are additional staff estimators. The notion is to provide early career estimators a couple of days look ahead rather than some immense task they will get lost in. The ability to plan, to delegate, to do quality assessments, to teach and to mentor are parts of this position as well.
Efficiency is something the company expects the lead to manage. Using Accubid for all it is worth is one responsibility. A derivative of using the full scope of Accubid is the availability of histories. There is far more than a single approach to every job. There are times that the intelligent use of job histories and well established square foot costing not only can be utilized but should be used to prevent 80% of estimating time to be spent on 15% of the overall job value. We are looking for smarts and a little business savvy in the lead estimator.
The lead must be a good administrator. This begins with a great dissection of the RFPs and ends with complete and uniform estimating files, and up to date database for the system and the contribution of assemblies and templates as time goes on. Quality work must be backed up with quality records in the company system.

The company is in pursuit of a reasonable balancing act. We need a lead estimator that knows how to find business advantage, whether through value engineering, alternatives or the discovery of errors or omissions that allow for a strategic effort to be staged. At the same time, the vision of the VP of Estimating is to present a cultural alternative to the prevailing South Florida construction culture, which is abusive. The GCs treat subs badly and the subs retaliate with change orders and claims. Loyalty is limited if there is loyalty at all. What the company wants to sell is reliable and repeatable partnership, the straight story and respect for the mutual interests of the GC and the company. Predictable and even-handed business exchange is good for everybody and has annuity value. It will take a while for the locals to get the picture and feel the advantages, but the VPs vision is sensible, practical and can be promoted.

SALARY, INCENTIVE, BENEFITS, PERKS
Base Compensation: $80,000.00 - $100,000.00 based on history, working peer level and track record.
Incentive Compensation: Profit sharing bonus.
