A great career opportunity now exists for a Lead Mechanical Systems Engineer to join this leading provider of medical products and services in order to lead and manage mechanical systems aspects of the development of new products.

This hands-on role requires an individual with a flair for innovation and the ability to apply mechanical systems, particularly pneumatic systems, in new product development from initial concept creation through to production. You must be able to demonstrate relevant technical expertise, strong team leadership and delivery, an ability to design reliable and robust mechanical systems and possess enthusiasm for problem solving and delivering innovative products to their customers.

You will be responsible for the application of mechanical systems and pneumatics technologies in new product development, from initial concept creation and prototype development through to transfer to manufacture. Your responsibilities will include leading the design and development of complex mechanical systems, with an emphasis on compressor development.
You will be responsible for technical team leadership in a range of multidisciplinary development projects and for developing innovative mechanical systems and associated design documentation and deliverables. You will direct and support in-house teams and 3rd party development partners as well as undertake test plan creation, execution and documentation. Your role will also include the recruitment and selection and mentoring/coaching of junior staff, as well as liaison with Quality and Regulatory affairs staff and external auditors. You will also participate in the development of efficient product development processes.

In order to succeed in this role, you will require a degree and/or higher degree in a relevant engineering or applied science discipline (for example: Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Materials Science, Mechatronics). You should be able to demonstrate technical expertise in areas such as mechanical systems and have extensive experience in designing, developing, and testing complex systems (with particular emphasis on mechanical systems, pneumatic systems and electromechanical systems). You will have experience of the development of compressor or pump systems and of the production of relevant documentation, e.g. technical specifications and verification test plans. You should also have experience of risk control measures in safety critical systems and knowlege of system safety documentation, e.g. hazard analysis and FMEA. Full life cycle product development experience and of introduction into volume manufacturing of complex mechanical systems is also required. Experience of the development of products in regulated environments, including risk analysis is also necessary.

Excellent analytical capabilities combined with strong interpersonal and communication skills are also required. You should also have experience of managing project teams and coaching juniors.

Preferably you will also have experience of medical device development and knowledge of ISO 13485 and ISO14971. The ability to formulate a project plan for a complex project and drive it to completion would be useful, as would a process orientated- demonstrating ability to think through problems in an ordered and structured way to come to an answer. It would also be advantageous if you have already gained, or are working towards, Chartered Engineer status with a relevant professional body.

The nature of the job means that there may, from time to time, be the need for attendance outside normal hours, including weekends. It may also be necessary to travel in the UK and overseas.
