Responsibilities: POSITION SUMMARY: The Lead Radiation Therapist is a professional therapist who shares in the management of a specific care area, accepting responsibility and authority in collaboration with the Chief Therapist. Lead Therapists will assume responsibility for specific activities related to maintaining the overall quality control of treatments and the orientation, education and supervision of senior and staff therapists in the Department of Radiation Oncology. Specific responsibilities include development of unit programs and departmental policies. These groups of activities will be delegated by the Chief Therapist and are in the general categories of administrative, educational and clinical responsibilities. The purpose of this position is to promote the philosophy and goals of the Department of Radiation Oncology through leadership, management and professional development of the therapist staff. SPECIFIC DUTIES: Clinical / Supervisory 1. Responsible for daily patient care, education of patients and appropriately involving patients and their families in his/her care and care decisions. 2. Coordinates the activities of the Senior and Staff Radiation Therapists and Clinical therapist Aide to ensure quality treatment delivery and maximum utilization of equipment and personnel. 3. Is directly responsible in the efficient operation of the assigned clinical treatment or simulation area. 4. Leads the therapist team in developing new techniques or resolving clinical problems. ? Resolves difficult set-ups and instructs staff members and students in this area. ? Practices continuos improvement and standardization of techniques. ? Triages emergent cases, negotiates scheduling of patients with other team members. ? Manages team during equipment failures and notifies patients as well as all functional areas of the department. ? Leads Quality Improvement Teams focused on clinical care issues such as treatment set-ups. 5. Responsible for maintaining Quality Assurance Measures on assigned unit to encompass all aspects of treatment and delivery and quality patient care. ? Accurately documents treatment variances using the appropriate treatment tool. ? Practices the QA program of each treatment unit and instructs new staff members and students as part of orientation. ? Documents all treatment delivery information. 6. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of the principles of growth and development from infant to geriatric stage of life span. In addition, s/he must possess the ability to assess patient relative data as deemed pertinent to age-specific needs and provide care as described in the department?s policy and procedure manual. 7. Coordinates all on-call activities with physicians and provides therapist back up coverage. Administrative 1. Works with Chief Therapist to develop, revise and maintain policies and procedures pertinent to treatment, simulation, new programs and personnel. 2. As directed by Chief Therapist, works with other departmental teams (physicians, nursing, physics, etc.) to problem solve and implement solutions around treatment planning/delivery problems. 3. Participates as a member of the Departmental Quality Improvement team, assists with developing, collecting data and presenting quality improvement initiatives pertinent to the departmental treatment and simulation activities. 4. Assists Chief Therapist and Quality Assurance Therapist to assure therapist competence in and compliance with mandatory yearly in-services, CPR certification, IV contrast education, and other activities and techniques that arise as practices change. 5. Assists the Chief Radiation Therapist in the periodic evaluation of new employees and staff. 6. Works with Chief Therapist to assure appropriate staffing, provides direct coverage when necessary. 7. Assists Chief Therapist in the recruitment and evaluation of potential candidates for departmental staff. 8. Works with Chief Therapist to develop, document and execute comprehensive orientation plans for new therapist staff and treatment machines. 9. Assists Chief Therapist in evaluation of new and experienced therapist staff to retain, and promote staff as appropriate. 10. Acts as a resource to Chief Therapist to assist with evaluation and remediation of staff that is not functioning independently. 11. Coordinates the clinical assignment of therapy students, assumes responsibility for orientation of therapy students to the unit, and assists with oral competency exams. 12. May elect to teach in the school of Radiation Therapy Technology 13. Assists Chief Therapist to develop and maintain systems for confirming new patient information, daily and weekly film reviews, new patient conference 14. Assists Chief Therapist in assessing, ordering and evaluating equipment and supplies for the assigned clinical area. 15. Assumes Chief Therapist Responsibilities if asked in the absence of the Chief Radiation Therapist. General 1. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development, assessment of patient relative data as deemed pertinent to age-specific needs and provides care as described in the department's policy and procedure manual. 2. Demonstrates cooperation and is responsive to all staff members. 3. Participates in specialty areas (TBI, SRS, HDR, etc.) 4. Attends and participates in regularly scheduled Therapist staff meetings. 5. Is an active member of professional organizations; participates in professional activates by attending meetings, serving on committees or task forces, writing and/or presenting scientific papers. Requirements: EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Must be a graduate of an accredited Radiation Therapy program, or equivalent, with a minimum of three years continuos clinical experience in a major Radiation Therapy department, i.e. Longwood Radiation Oncology Center, Joint Center for Radiation Therapy. Bachelor?s degree preferred. CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE: Must have a valid Massachusetts license in Radiation Therapy. ARRT certification is preferred. SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS OR OTHER REQUIREMANTS:. Serves as a role model for all radiation therapy staff while promoting the policies and procedures as set forth by both the Quality Improvement committee and overall mission of the institution. Lead Radiation Therapist staff are required to rotate whenever and wherever directed by the Chief Radiation Therapist. GUIDELINES FOR PROMOTION: Qualified candidates are considered by the management team at the time of their Performance review. New employees who qualify at the time of their hiring date will be considered upon the successful completion of their probationary period and three month review. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS: Works with ionizing radiation, as well as cancer patients, both adults and children, and their families. SPECIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Lifting patients; lifting and positioning beam directional, immobilization, and beam modifying devices; positioning and carrying x-ray film cassettes. LEVEL OF SUPERVISION: SUPERVISED BY: Chief Radiation Therapist SUPERVISES: Staff Radiation Therapist, Senior Radiation Therapist, Clinical Technology Aide, and students CAREER PATH: With additional years of experience and additional collegiate-level education, possible advancement to the positions of Chief Radiation Therapist, Clinical Instructor, Educational Director, or Technical Director.
