Mission for the Charge Nurse
The mission of the Resident Care Charge Nurse is to translate needs into resolutions by actively coordinating the daily operations, services and communications of the Resident Care unit at The Whitcomb Senior Living Community. This role reports to the Director of Resident Care, and provides the administrative and nursing support needed to ensure the unit functions smoothly and effectively and that the residents receive excellent care.
Required Outcomes
During initial employment phase in the role, the Resident Care Charge Nurse shall:
1. Become familiar with the services provided by the Whitcomb within 30 days.
2. Become familiar with the residents and resident’s needs that receive assistance from the nursing department.
3. Assume full responsibility for receiving and coordinating of doctor’s orders, pharmacy/medications, labs and x-rays within 14 days.
4. Become familiar with the policies and procedures of the Nursing Department within 7 days.

Resident Care Charge Nurse Responsibilities
· Professional dress and behavior while on duty. This includes not discussing personal life with residents or families while on duty.
· Obtain a comprehensive verbal report from the nurse and/or med tech going off duty and giving report to night nurse or med tech coming on shift. Please go down the list of AL residents and detail any change with that resident at report.
· Review the MAR to identify any order or treatment changes that have occurred since the last time on duty.
· Face to face inspection of the Assisted Living residents and their apartments. To make sure the aide assignments are being completed, gait belts are being worn and used. This should be done approximately an hour before the end of the shift. If resident needs are indentified, the aide assigned that resident should be informed and the need should be met. A list of corrections needed should be provided to the next shift charge so follow-up can be performed by the next shift. Trends should be tracked and reported to the Director.
· Acute coaching for aides provided when needed. The Director should be informed of this by note.
· Administer meds and perform treatments if no med tech on shift, per policy.
· Strict adherence to the Medication Error Policy.
· Monitor and answer call lights using text phone. Notify aide of resident call or delegate the cell phone to an aide/tech who is competent to perform this duty.
· Monitor VIP dining room to ensure aides are eating with and assisting residents on second shift. On all shifts check that aides are taking assigned breaks and following VIP dining room policy.
· Follow incident report guidelines and notify family, notify physician and Resident Care Director and call 911 in an emergency.
· **Coordinate and process any new med/treatment orders that occur after 2:30 PM or if day nurse identifies orders that need completion from first shift.
· Call for medication refill if supplies low. (7 or less medications available.
· Completing admission/resumption check off form for any residents coming back to building.
· Call staff to cover any call offs for the next shift per Director’s direction.
· **Make sure the aides have picked up the residents laundry per posted schedule, and taken to basement for second shift.
· Delegate to aides to replace supplies in rooms including gloves and notify Resident Care Coordinator if supplies are needed including briefs, depends, chux etc.
· Coordinating AL residents being taken to activities.
· Blood sugar checks.
· Addressing acute resident emergencies and medical needs and coordinating prn Dr.’s appointments or ER visits.
· Answering the nursing station phone.
· Make sure all aides complete documentation for the shift
· Facilitation of resident/family issues
· Call Director informing her of any resident change in condition, family issues that cannot be resolved or staffing issues.
· Coordination/arrange x-rays or labs.
· Teamwork and encouraging teamwork with all staff.
· Perform and teach staff “resident directed care”. Making sure that every resident is allowed and encouraged to do as much for themselves as they are capable of doing. Also, allowing residents to make as many choices for themselves as possible…that do not endanger themselves or others.
· Duties as assigned by Director or Coordinator.
Compensation:
· The Resident Care Coordinator shall receive compensation based upon experience.
Performance Evaluations:
Key areas of evaluation will include quality of daily duties performed, quality of organization and communication, attitude and service to residents, family, employees and vendors, as well as commitment to the overall success of the organization. Performance in these areas will determine increases in base compensation potential bonuses.
