Responsibilities:
- Evaluates life insurance applications through case underwriting, including determination of insurability or limits of insurability, application approvals, denials and ratings. Responsible for providing efficient underwriting, overall risk assessment and risk management analysis.
- Demonstrate a solid, consistent technical proficiency of underwriting guidelines and underlying risk management philosophy.
- Ensure proper documentation of underwriting processes through the development and upkeep of the TIAA-CREF underwriting manual
- Underwrite inforce policy changes, such as reinstatements, rate reductions and smoker changes. Responsible for ordering, receiving and reviewing the underwriting requirements necessary to process these requests.
- Reinsure coverage in excess of company retention in compliance with contractual provisions.
- Communication: Articulate verbal and written skills with the ability to communicate with and adapt to diverse individuals within multiple levels of the company. Strong listening skills with the ability to resolve conflicts.
- Maintains the highest level of professionalism. Strong presentation and facilitation skills. Creates a positive environment by fostering open and honest communication. This position will sometimes interact with Participants and will work closely with several internal and external customers including the wholesalers, phone center agents, case managers, compliance, reinsurers, policy service, and exam vendors.
- Teamwork: Ability to closely partner with internal business partners and other key members of the organization. Strong negotiation skills with sound judgment and decision-making.
- Ability to work independently.
- Analytical: A critical thinker with the ability to evaluate and solve complex problems. Recommends improvements or changes in underwriting procedures and practices. Quick to recognize and decide the most effective course of action in a complex and constantly changing environment.
Qualifications
• Requires 5 years of underwriting experience, understanding and evaluating medical, financial and other application information, as well as knowledge of legal ramifications regarding decisions made on applications.
• This position requires knowledge of our reinsurance agreements.
• Obtainment of the Fellowship, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) requirement; obtainment of Fellowship Life Office Management Association (FLMI) desired.
• This position does not require NASD registrations or state insurance licensing.
