Macro Economist Japan recruitment
Job Purpose:
Functional role: Prime research responsibility will be on economics, interest rates and currencies in conjunction with a global team. Recommendations and forecasts will directly lead to shaping the CIO house view for WM as well as investment products designed by UBS investment bank and promoted via our Capital Markets team. This knowledge puts the economist in a position where educational support to client and client advisors is required.
Key Responsibilities:
Function specific tasks: Contribution to the global and APAC setup: The economist looks after Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Investable thematic recommendations are an integral part of the job. The analyst should not be afraid of giving clear guidance on investable assets (both long and short) with a high degree of flexibility. Forecasts need to be formulated within the interest rate and currency space. The economist in Japan writes regular publications on the economies are covered. This can be in the form of standalone- or as contributions to flagship publications. Thematic, cross asset research pieces are expected. They can be authored with other asset class specialists. Present on the space you cover to global colleagues, helping to visibly shape the house view on Japan/AUS/NZ and clients upon request.
Location specific tasks: Update/comment on global markets (macro, fixed income, FX, equity) to our local colleagues/CAs in morning meeting, strategic investment meeting, etc. Be proactive and pragmatic enough to be able to come up with product ideas with IPS colleagues based on the CIO WM Research view. Be prepared for client advisors to take you to joint calls and to face Japanese local clients. Stand ready to establish domestic investment themes that can be utilized in the Research Based Advisory process for actionable ideas.
Deputy functions:
Functional: Deputize the north East Asia economist who covers China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea. Hence, a minimal understanding of these economies is necessary.
Regional: Deputize head of WM Research Japan and provide back-up for various daily tasks.
Requirements
Qualifications/experience:
- Holding a masters or bachelor degree in economics/financial markets is precondition to join the team.
- 3 years experience in on the underlying economies is a must. This especially applies to Asian economies.
- Knowledge of financial derivatives and how they can be applied to different asset classes is crucial in this position.
- Know how to make point estimates (forecasts).
- Excellent spoken and written Japanese and English skills are vital.
- Strong presentation skills are critical.
- Excellent team player capabilities: The candidate will not only work within Wealth Management Research team in Asia, but has also stakeholders outside Asia.
- Postgraduate degrees are welcome.
