Maintenance Plumber
Responsibilities:
Working under the general supervision of the shop foreman or a leadman, these
employees perform skilled plumbing work at the journeyman level in the repair,
assembling, and installation of pipes, fittings, and heating fixtures, gas and water fixtures,
and drainage systems.
Work is assigned by the shop foreman or a leadman and carried out by the Maintenance
Plumber independently, selecting methods most suitable for the job. Work is spot-
checked during progress or upon completion.
Characteristic Duties:
•
Assembles, installs and repairs pipes, fittings, and fixtures for gas, water and
sanitary lines, stormdrains, toilets, sinks, boilers, heat exchangers valves, pumps,
drinking fountains, water stills, hot water heaters, etc.
•
Cuts and threads pipe
•
Bends pipe to required angle
•
Joins pipe by use of flanges, fittings, solder, caulking, welding, epoxy cement and
diversified materials
•
Performs maintenance on plumbing by replacing washers on leaky faucets,
mending burst pipes, opening clogged drains
•
Detects malfunctions in plumbing systems, shuts systems down, and makes repairs
•
Works on glass, plastic, copper, brass, steel, and cast iron pipe varying in size from
1/8 to 1/4 inches
•
Seals cast iron pipe joints with caulking and lead
•
Installs and repairs gas lines
•
May do minor plumbing-related welding, and brazing.
Qualifications:
These employees must be skilled in the use of the tools, materials, and equipment of the
plumbing trade. They must have sufficient experience to qualify as a journeyman
plumber, with approximately four years of actual work in the trade. This may include
time spent in apprenticeship or vocational training.
Specialist Plumber
Responsibilities:
This classification describes positions in which employees carry out their duties with
considerable independence. The nature of the work is essentially the same as that
described for the Maintenance Plumber classification. However, Specialist Plumbers
schedule their own work, do preliminary layout work themselves and receive little or no
assistance with diagnosis of problems. Their completed jobs are seldom reviewed.
Characteristic Duties:
Carries out the duties listed for the Maintenance Plumber classification with far less
supervision or direction from a foreman or leadman
•
May operate a one-map shop; performs all work independently.
Qualifications:
In addition to the qualifications listed for the Maintenance level, these employees must
have sufficient experience to work independently, and without assistance, most of the
time. They must have demonstrated this ability to work independently in previous work
assignments at a skill level equivalent to the Maintenance Plumber classification.
Plumber/Steamfitter
This job series describes positions in which the major responsibilities are a variety of
plumbing duties performed at the journey level, as well as steamfitter work performed
inside buildings on medium and low pressure steam and condensate systems.
