Manager / Director, Debt & Alternatives recruitment

The Future Fund was established in April 2006 by the Australian Government to make provision for the Commonwealth’s unfunded superannuation liabilities. The balance of the Future Fund was AUD 77.0 billion at 30 June 2012. The Future Fund’s Board and management are also responsible for the investment of Nation-building Funds which collectively amounted to AUD13.5 billion.

The Debt and Alternatives team is responsible for managing the debt portfolio, the alternatives portfolio as well as the three Nation-Building Fund portfolios. The team develops investment strategies across each of these portfolios and works closely with external managers on the implementation of these strategies. The team is responsible for a substantial portion of the Fund’s capital and runs a highly diverse investment program across a wide range of asset classes within the debt and alternatives universe.

Role overview

The Manager/Director will contribute significantly to the development of the Debt and Alternatives portfolios by undertaking in-depth research into managers and strategies within the broad debt and alternatives investment fields. In addition to debt managers, a particular focus is expected to be in researching hedge fund managers and strategies.

The Future Fund operates an active management program through a stable of external investment managers. A broad range of strategies and asset classes are included within the Debt and Alternatives programs, including the full range of debt, hedge fund and other niche strategies.

As well as being integral in the manager selection and monitoring program, the Manager/Director is also expected to leverage the insights from managers and other external partners to contribute to the broader strategic portfolio construction process across the entire Fund.

You will need to have the following experience:

• a dedicated individual with a minimum of 7 years relevant experience, with either hands on investment management experience or manager research experience;

• likely to come from an investment manager, investment consultant, multimanager firm or large institutional fund;

• flexible and adaptable to cover a range of strategies within the debt and alternatives universe; and

• experienced at building and managing relationships with investment professionals

• a strong understanding of the universe of hedge fund strategies and, ideally, the universe of debt instruments

• an understanding of investment risks across the breadth of capital markets, and an appreciation of “whole of fund” issues in portfolio construction
