Summary
The Operations Engineering Manager will manage a team of operations engineers and ground systems engineers who are first-tier support for spacecraft operations’ ground system and who manage the implementation of our concept of operations. The work will include:
- Overseeing the team that maintains our ground system at peak performance, modifying it where needed to effect fluidic changes in our concept of operations.
- Partnering closely with sister ground support teams, program managers, operators, quality assurance, and systems engineers to plan and implement new capabilities into the ground system based on business needs.
- Ensuring the team follows the established processes, and improves processes where applicable.
- Occasional non-traditional hours supporting the launch of new spacecraft, expansion of our ground network, and troubleshooting of operational systems. This position may include a requirement for certification to operate our spacecraft as part of initial training.
- The preferred candidate shall demonstrate the ability to work with minimal supervision; technical and personnel management experience is required. Excellent interpersonal communications skills and experience in working with vendors, subcontractors, and non-engineering personnel; demonstrated ability in diagnosing and solving hardware integration and box level problems; understanding of Spacecraft Telemetry and Commanding equipment and software is a plus. Software development skills or software scripting skills are a plus. Strong spacecraft subsystems familiarity is a plus.
Manager Responsibilities
- Responsible for managing a team of 7-10 operations engineers and ground systems operators.
- Responsible for schedule and technical performance of each component.
- Provide leadership to the operations engineering and ground system operations teams on a daily basis addressing resource, personnel and technical issues and giving guidance.
- Collaborate with other managers, system engineers, testers, and architects to ensure architectural integrity, effective integration test and ongoing system stability.
- Participate in staff recruitment, performance assessment, work assignments, salary, training, career development and recognition/disciplinary actions. Provide mentoring where needed.
- Coordinate vendor contracts, deliveries and schedule with affected company parties.
Engineering Responsibilities
- Provide ground engineering support of on-orbit operations of the DigitalGlobe constellation of satellites, including 24x7 on-call support for the Mission Control Center.
- Lead and conduct the definition, system engineering, design and implementation of the operational functions and procedures for ground components within the Mission Control Center and/or Remote Ground Terminals.
- Work with Systems Engineering and Operations Readiness teams to develop documentation to ensure clear definition of design for a developer and training for the satellite operations crew respectively.
- Interface with, provide support to, and prioritize issues for equipment and system contractors.
- Along with the Operations Readiness team, assist in and/or lead testing of ground systems, including test design, execution, and analysis of results.

Desired Experience
- Experience supporting real-time spacecraft and ground system or analogous system.
- Familiarity and experience working with a Systems Engineering organization, including requirements analysis, concept definition, architecture and concept of operations.
- Experience and skills in ground system procedure development.
- Experience with programming and scripting languages (eg. Ruby, perl, java) and LINUX and/or UNIX, proficiency highly desired.
- Strong understanding of satellite ground system equipment, software and systems, which include collection planning, mission operations, and image production and delivery systems.
Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years overall experience in technical operations, satellite ground systems operations is a plus.
- Minimum of 5 years of technical leadership experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Math, or Physics; Master’s degree desired. Training in leadership/management desired.
- U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required; candidate must be able to obtain required security clearance within 90 days from start of employment, and will be required to work in a closed area 10-90%.
- Able to travel which may be up to 10% of the year
