Battelle’s Energy Systems Product Line is a $30M business annually, providing economically viable technology-based solutions, products, and services to our commercial and government clients across the energy conversion supply chain. The product line departments include Oil and Gas Exploration and CO2 Sequestration, Infrastructure and Risk Assessments, and Process and Systems Engineering. We are currently seeking a Manager for our Process and Systems Engineering Department. This position reports to the Energy Systems Product Line Manager and is located in Columbus, Ohio.
The Process and Systems Engineering Department is an integral portion of the business that provides inorganic chemistry, process systems engineering, and chemical engineering services to support the successful implementation of solutions from project conceptualization to technology implementation. Offerings in this department include process modeling, new process and process equipment development, equipment testing and evaluation, systems integration, process scale-up and demonstration, industrial process improvement, technology insertion, and sustainability and life cycle evaluations. Technology areas include, but are not limited to, bioenergy, grid systems, wastewater treatment and desalination, fuel cells, and energy efficiency. Growth is anticipated in these areas, as well as the areas of chemical and physical separations processes, heat pumps, and solar/thermal and solar/electrical energy. The Department has active off-site operations in Dayton, Ohio, and Aberdeen, Maryland, that will be expected to grow as well.
The Manager of this Department will be an energetic individual who is responsible for ensuring operational success and expert delivery within the process and systems engineering domain to meet the revenue, growth, and net income targets set by senior management. As this Department grows, it will be transitioning technologies from the laboratory to field operations in a product development effort. The successful candidate will also support the product line manager in developing and executing strategic plans for this Department to ensure acceptable business results. In addition to operational responsibilities, this position will support business development and develop client relationships in the pursuit of business to support defined strategic plans. The successful candidate will have demonstrated and relevant technical expertise and experience in strategy and client focus with a proven track record in the management and development of staff and capabilities. As this group will be transitioning technologies from the laboratory to field operations in a product development effort, the successful candidate will be responsible for establishing robust design and engineering processes. In addition, this individual will be responsible for establishing processes and procedures necessary for field operations and deployment.
Position Responsibilities:
-Provide leadership to 50+ staff across a wide range of disciplines with annual budget/revenue of $20M
-Manage performance of the Process and Systems Engineering Department to achieve financial, operational, and growth goals
-Manage resource allocation to ensure successful project delivery to clients.
-Define new business areas and strategies for growth as relevant to the Department and Product Line
-Manage current control procedures for design and engineering processes and establish new procedures necessary for safe field operations and deployment, supporting the product line ISO 9001 accreditation.
-Assist other Departments across Battelle in providing chemical process and process systems engineering support
-Ensure department capabilities and resources are aligned with current and future market needs. Translate client needs and future direction with Battelle capabilities into successful business relationships
-Review and approve, as appropriate, proposals, reports, and articles.
-Provide necessary training and mentoring opportunities for staff.
-Manage manpower planning across the group to ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix commensurate with business needs. Integrate Battelle capabilities and services across multiple Product Lines as they apply to client interests.
-Establish performance goals, appraise performance, and manage talent across the department.
The following requirements must be met to be considered for this position:
-Master’s degree in Engineering or related scientific field, preferably in chemical, petroleum, or systems engineering
-10+ years of Technical and Technical Leadership experience
-Experience in managing multiple operational budgets
-Demonstrated success managing diverse staff
-Demonstrated success identifying new business markets and growing revenue and technical capability to meet market needs
-Excellent communication and technical presentation skills for both external and internal clients
-Demonstrated experience in process engineering and scale-up, including systems-level field demonstrations and extended operations
-Demonstrated project management experience
The following is desired, but not required, to be considered for this position:
-PhD or doctorate with dissertation in energy-related field
-Management of subordinate groups in process engineering or systems engineering
-Relevant experience in a design and process engineering firm
-PMP certification
-PE license in a National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) state
-Demonstrated experience with ISO 9001 or other relevant quality system certification
-Publications or patents related to demonstration of technical success
