Major Responsibilities
- Leading and strengthening a high calibre international legal team through recruitment, development, coaching, motivation and performance management of senior legal staff across geographies.
- Assisting the corporate senior management team with corporate initiatives and divestitures; and advising the business on the litigation, regulatory and reputational risks of possible business decisions. Providing preventative legal counselling, particularly with respect to the legal risks associated with the business practices, and providing solutions to minimise corporate exposure. Overseeing litigation management.
- Conducting a detailed review of State Street’s European legal function in order to develop a business plan in line with industry best practice and ensuring its successful implementation. Ensuring that legal and regulatory initiatives are at the heart of business strategic planning and operational execution.
- Co-ordinating and monitoring the delivery of legal services across the business by ensuring that clear policies are in place, accessible and consistently communicated. Responsible for reviewing, negotiating and finalising complex legal contracts and documentation.
- Partnering with Senior Executives across multiple investment, service, research and trading platforms to ensure alignment of legal strategies with commercial objectives.
- Taking a strategic view on behalf of the business on the best and necessary practice in legal risk management and establishing and maintaining a robust corporate legal and regulatory framework within which the business will operate.
- Overseeing the selection and management of the activities and budget of outside legal counsel internationally. Establishing and administering procedures for evaluating the quality and cross-services of outside counsel.
- Representing the legal function on committees and project teams.
- Maintaining strong, mutually beneficial relationships with the FSA and other major regulatory bodies which support the group.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will be a talented, senior lawyer with the requisite technical, commercial and interpersonal skills to allow him or her to function successfully in a highly visible and challenging position. The following background is strongly preferred:
- Significant post qualification experience with first rate academic credentials and an excellent track record in their career to date.
- Likely to have had considerable experience in a high quality law firm and may have subsequently transitioned successfully into a senior in-house role within a major financial institution
- Knowledge of one or more of the following business areas; Asset management, Global Custody, Securities Services, Investment Research
