Market Analyst – Cross Bench. Oil Trading. recruitment
Role synopsis:
This front office role involves liaising with various business units and external consultants to collate and analysis market information and work closely with market-facing traders to drive successful trading strategy. The goal is to identify changes in supply and demand fundamentals and communicate the likely impact on price action to the trading benches in a timely fashion - this will help drive continued growth in trading profits. Cross Bench Analysts work closely with Bench Analysts and Traders across all benches to help inform successful trading strategies, including delivering and co-ordinating key cross bench projects. Initially, the successful applicant will be engaged in monitoring European refinery activity, including refinery margins, turnarounds and the resulting refinery crude throughput forecast. The successful candidate will be expected to articulate impacts on products and crude as a result of changes in key variables and develop a deep understanding of the refining system as a whole. They will also be involved in both short and long term cross bench projects which aim to give greater insight into cross commodity trading through its linkages with the global refining system.
Key Accountabilities
- Collaborate effectively with bench analysts to develop consistent cross-product macro balances and interface with analysts in other regions, contributing to the assembly of coordinated and consistent global balances.
- Work with the various benches to understand what they consider the major issues in the market and support the benches where necessary; this will include any major trends in the oil markets which has relevance across the different benches.
- Coordinate cross-bench analysis of emerging crises and industry events to deliver comprehensive, timely and accurate information and insight to the benches (e.g.-SPR releases, Iran sanction impacts, Libya crisis impacts, overall impacts of cold weather events, etc.). This will involve extensive interaction with the benches to gather information, synthesize it and quickly communicate accurate conclusions/implications.
- Drive useful and insightful analysis across global Trading Books in their region, responding to ad hoc requests by conducting studies/analysis leading to insights (e.g. comprehensive assessments of country level tax and regulatory changes, trends in fuel use, fuel substitution, etc.). Continually solicit requests for ad hoc analysis.
- Conduct macro analysis, including the analysis of key demand and supply drivers of regional markets, margins and spreads.
- Understand the major moves that are going on in the market and drive original analysis in the team
- Work closely with Cross bench, Bench and Lead Analysts to share knowledge and meet common objectives
- Identify and test opportunities for analysis that will support the commodity lines in the region
- Support the continuing development of the Analytics infrastructure
Essential Education
- Analytical background - professional or education
- Knowledge of downstream oil sector, particularly refining
- Understanding of drivers of oil market fundamentals - supply, demand
- Modelling experience
- Strong Excel skills
- Personable
- Desire to learn
- Knowledge of trading instruments is desirable - cracks, spreads, boxes
- Interest in financial markets and understanding of economics and drivers of prices
Other essential skills and knowledge
- Strong academic background - preferably in Economics
- Numerical background desirable
- Statistical/econometric skillset
