PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Primary responsibility is to work collaboratively with EMD Serono colleagues, Merck KGaA colleagues, and external parties to prepare the US launch of a phase III oncology product candidate. Responsibilities include identifying market needs, developing and executing strategic and tactical marketing plans including promotional strategies and plans, market research plans, reimbursement strategies and plans, distribution strategies and plans, and developing the operational forecast among other responsibilities. As assigned, may also serve as global commercial lead for certain project(s) in support of launch preparation or promotional activities post launch.
If needed, may also support commercialization activities for early stage oncology products (discovery - phase II).
KEY TASKS RESPONSIBILITIES
- Primary focus is to develop and implement a US launch and commercialization plan for a phase III oncology product candidate. This includes (in conjunction with Global Strategic Marketing or other global and local functions) development of pricing strategy, positioning, messaging, creative campaign, managed care strategy, health economics study needs, Phase IV objectives and timing, and distribution approach. Also includes but not limited to development of a draft package insert, development of commercial forecasts, preparation and management of brand budget to support pre-launch efforts and post launch commercialization activities.
- Serve as key source of knowledge of the therapeutic area, the product (s), the competition and the factors that may change the market in the future. Monitor competitive trends and suggests appropriate action to better position EMD products in development.
- Work collaboratively with in house and outsource partners to research market needs and opportunities. Represent these to Senior Management and/or product teams and helps to interpret data producing sound decision-making.
- If needed, participate on global or local product teams and/or Commercial Teams to represent the needs of the US market in product development or commercialization process. As assigned, serve as global commercial lead on global product team(s). Accountable to assure that US commercial views are formulated, consolidated and communicated to the project team(s).
- As needed, influence product team(s) to allocate both development and commercial resources to produce profitable marketing opportunities for EMD. This includes development of clinical trial plans and professional meeting plans.
- As needed, analyze commercial potential of compounds in development including product forecasts.
- Manage interactions as appropriate with partners and co-promotion arrangements.
- Manage, supervise, and develop marketing associate(s) and/or product manager(s) as assigned.
EDUCATION LANGUAGES
- Undergraduate degree in business, marketing or sciences, MBA Preferred
PROFESSIONAL SKILLS EXPERIENCE
- 10 years of pharmaceutical and/or biotech Sales, Managed Markets, Government Affairs, Medical Affairs and/or Marketing experience
- 5 years of pharmaceutical and/or biotech product marketing experience
- 3 years of oncology product marketing experience
- Have launched at least one biotech or pharmaceutical product into the US marketplace, preferably in oncology
- Deep understanding of the oncology drug development process, US regulatory requirements for oncology drug approvals, and the oncology marketplace (solid tumor and non-small cell lung cancer), including Medicare Part B policy, Buy Bill processes and oncology distribution channels.
- Deep understanding and compliance with the OIG and FDA regulations governing pharmaceutical marketing and the PhRMA code
- Strong, team-oriented leader with excellent communication skills and the ability to influence and work effectively within a matrix and multi-cultural environment
Ideal Experience/Skills:
- 5 years of experience in oncology product marketing
- Experience with companion diagnostics development and/or marketing
- New product planning experience and/or portfolio planning experience a plus
- MBA
