JOB TITLE
Materials and Processes Engineer
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
· Materials Processes support to satellite programs;
· Follow-up of NCRs and communication of relevant issues to expert support;
· Support to Materials and Processes Control Panels, incl. revision of declared materials, processes, and mechanical parts lists;
· Carrying out hardware inspections on flight as well as qualification and testing hardware;
· Co-ordination of required testing for the assessment of surface mounts technology in external facilities;
· Perform failure analysis investigations;
· Organizing and controlling the internal and external laboratory work concerning the surface mount verification programs;
· The assessment of PCB joining techniques and repair (solder joints, surface mount technology);
· Performance of failure and defect investigations as part of the evaluation of electronic materials and processes;
· General metallurgical assessment related to failure analysis including the assessment of metallic joining techniques and repair (welding, bonding, brazing, etc.);
· Providing expert support to projects and participation in project meetings, reviews and audits for the ESA projects and activities;
· Use of the various optical, electron microscopy (including EDX) and mechanical test equipment for the evaluation of materials ranging from small electrical interconnects to structural materials;
· Assisting with Mandatory Inspections on populated printed circuit boards at suppliers’ premises on request of projects;
· Reporting of work in the form of technical memoranda, reports and presentations.
REQUIRMENTS
· University degree (M.Sc. level) with either materials or processing engineering (materials science, materials physics/chemistry or a related field.), aeronautical engineering or PA engineering with a focus on materials processes;
· Strong background on materials, with a focus on metals (stainless steel, and steel, copper based, titanium and aluminum alloys, solder alloys) and ceramics, ideally on PCB assemblies;
· Hands on experience of laboratory work including but not limited to metallographic samples preparation and observation, SEM analysis, acoustic microscopy, mechanical testing;
· Knowledge of industrial processes for materials such as welding or machining, knowledge of soldering is an asset;
· A good understanding of surface mount technology, metallography, microscopy and mechanical testing is a specific asset;
· Good communication skills and a fluency in English writing.
