Senior Principal Materials Engineer/ Hertfordshire/ Defense Industry/ Salary to £42k + Bens

A major defence client requires a Materials Engineer to undertake a full range of materials engineering activities in line with all relevant process, quality and other requirements, supplying specialist advice and support to Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Commodities, Quality across Programmes and to other functions.

Please note that due to the nature of the work candidates must be willing and able to pass security vetting to an SC level.

The role will involve the following:

  1. Provide Materials expertise and consultancy to my client in the selection and utilisation of Materials and related Processes
  2. Responsible for the Materials and Processes policy for specialist domain (metallic) within projects -national or international
  3. Define an international strategy, prepare and maintain MP Specifications and Procedures ensuring compliance with statutory, regulatory and corporate requirements within area(s) of specialism and keep abreast of changes which may impact the business.
  4. Provide technical expertise and consultancy in the resolution of hardware problems and investigations either in development, in manufacture, or in delivered hardware
  5. Carry out technical analyses and investigations (independently or through leadership of a multi-skilled project team) of complex problems, issues and opportunities to provide conclusions and implications.
  6. Provide technical support to Design and Project Peer Reviews
  7. Provide technical support to Commodities and Procurement in the assessment of sub-contractors, suppliers and other external agencies.
  8. Underwrite appraisal of Project Materials Lists within MP and recommend solutions to avoid obsolescence, minimize proliferation, ensure performance to Product Requirements
  9. Plan, control and deliver assigned projects, work packages and collaborative research programmes, ensuring requirements are delivered within the agreed quality, time and cost.
  10. Promote and qualify novel solutions to projects in relevant technical areas.
  11. Provide Technical leadership for the MP group - Develop skills and capabilities of others in specialised domain (metallic)
  12. Act as the main point of contact with customers (internal and external) and/or suppliers and collaborators in specialised domain (metallic) on Materials engineering matters, to resolve a full range of problems and issues and to maintain awareness in both parties of priorities and objectives.
  13. Support the identification of business opportunities and the preparation of bids in area(s) of expertise to facilitate the development of the highest quality bids.
