Mechanical Design Engineer

The Mechanical Design Engineer will conceptualize and design key elements of Joule’s unique SolarConverter® system. He or she will be expected to develop novel approaches to aspects of Joule’s technology for which few precedents exist, and be prepared to deploy and evaluate field installations. The ideal candidate is excited and undaunted by technical challenges, learns on the fly and enjoys a wide variety of roles associated with a fast-paced, dynamic organization.  Joule’s Massachusetts-based operations, including this position, will be in Bedford, Massachusetts.  

 

Responsibilities

 

·         Design sub-systems and components for mass manufactured photobioreactor systems

·         Envision, document and present creative mechanical solutions

·         Design for efficient, high volume manufacturing

·         Create engineering documentation including specifications, CAD models, drawings, bills of material

·         Material selection for prototype, pilot and production applications

·         Design, build and test prototype devices  and test assemblies

·         Conduct design reviews and FMEAs

·         Create detailed test plans and test reports

·         Ensure product reliability and safety

·         Qualify and work with manufacturing partners

 

Qualifications

 

The position requires five to ten years of experience in product development, plus a degree in mechanical engineering or a similar field with a solid foundation in physics and fluid dynamics. Candidates should have experience designing for injection molding and other manufacturing methods. They should be proficient in the use of SolidWorks and PDM to create complex geometry, assemblies and drawings, and should have expertise in engineering documentation including drawing standards, conventions and tolerance analysis.
