Mechanical Design Handling Team Engineer Job in Plymouth PL40ST, South West UK

A large Nuclear Defence client are looking for a Mechanical Handling Design Engineer for a permanent assignment within their South West division in Plymouth, Devon.

The Nuclear Engineering Directorate Mechanical Handling Team provides professional technical Design Authority guidance and design support to the Submarine Refuel, Naval Base, Appledore, nuclear and non-nuclear facilities / assets.

The main duties/responsibilities associated with the Design Engineer position include:

To undertake surveys of dockyard equipment / plant within specialisation and to update / maintain 'as-built' records.
To prepare survey reports and other technical documentation that is raised within the group as a result of the survey / inspection process.
To develop design solutions for the manufacture of Refit Support / Mechanical Handling Equipment from a customer's initial design brief. Development of design solutions might include the preparation of 2D / 3D drawing information, design calculations and supporting technical documentation.
To assess the suitability of existing mechanical handling equipment against modern design code requirements.
To produce detailed design documentation inline with company procedures involving, Scopes of Work, Method Statements, Commissioning Reports, Technical Reports, raise Change Requests, Concessions, detailed design drawings.
To contribute to HAZID, HAZOPS, Design Reviews and Safety Case studies.
To provide professional Design Authority advice to Facility Design and Safety Managers, Plant / Production Managers in all technical matters associated with Babcock Marine Refit Support Equipment and Mechanical Handling Assets.

The Design Engineer directly reports to the Senior/Principal Design Engineer and their accountabilities are:
For the SQEP, professional conduct for their area of responsibility.
For program delivery, costs and quality for their area of responsibility.

Key Skills and Knowledge
Essential
A sound knowledge in the application of structural/mechanical engineering first principles.
Competent with software packages (MS Word, Excel, Electronic Data Management, 2D AutoCAD or similar design packages).
Knowledge of engineering theory, materials and components.
Knowledge of specific regulations (e.g. LOLER, PUWER, etc).

Desirable
Assessment of structures using Finite Element Analysis techniques (STAAD, ANSYS).
Able to use 3D modelling software (Inventor).
Knowledge of Design Codes, British Standards, ASME codes and European codes (e.g. BS 5950, BS 2573.

Key Behaviours and Technical Competencies
Must be a good team player and is required to work along side other members of NED and with customers.
Membership of an appropriate engineering institution is desirable.

Experience
Appropriate experience in an Engineering field/or completion of a technical apprenticeship with appropriate experience.

Qualifications
HNC/Degree (or equivalent) with relevant experience in an appropriate engineering discipline.
Design and Safety 6 Pack, Design and Safety Foundation Course 2d and 3d CAD Training.
