SUMMARY/ GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be the designer on all mechanical related design aspects of projects to ensure design requirements are complete and to deliver complete project requirements, using AutoCAD and MS Office software. The incumbent will be the consultant for the engineer in interpreting design concept and determining requirements of detailed working drawings.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB FUNCTIONS:

·         Performs mechanical designs for new construction, renovation, and improvement projects for a variety of facilities, including utility systems.  Develops plans and specifications for: water, sewage, heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), fire suppression, natural gas, medical gasses, compresses air and other systems that would normally be associated for use in facilities such as multi-story office buildings, restaurants, hospitals and communication structures. 

·         Coordinates and consults with other engineering functions, environmental, safety, managers and staff to determine design concepts and ensure compliance in all areas.

·         Coordinates projects with other designers in other disciplines or with architects.  Applies knowledge of other disciplines to determine coordination effort required to address various mechanical design considerations.

·         Complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment.  Observes that federal, state, and local codes concerning health, safety, and environment are adhered to in the programming, design and construction of facilities.

·         Uses updated and current version of computer software such as information management programs, computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) programs, and project tracking programs to solve engineering problems and facilitate work.

·         Researches code requirements and relays information to design team and design supervisor.

·         Reads and interprets blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.

·         Researches and analyzes design requests, specifications and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs.

·         Performs energy analyses, operational studies, and technical investigations to identify and select the best mechanical systems for design projects.

·         Works with mathematical and structural concepts.

·         Performs mechanical engineering calculations to size and specify mechanical system components.

·         Assists engineers to implement operating procedures, design systems and provide technical information.

·         Performs related work as assigned.

Job Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

·         Professional knowledge of a broad range of mechanical engineering concepts, principles, and practices and extensive familiarity with other engineering disciplines and architecture in order work with other engineering disciplines and architects.

·         Knowledge of a broad range of engineering and construction standards, methods, practices, and techniques, materials, and equipment.

·         Knowledge of design techniques, standards, tools and principles. 

·         Ability to plan, conduct and record site/facility surveys and inspections.

·         Ability to develop layouts and detail drawings using AutoCAD 2012 and other MS Office Suite software.

·         Ability to create mechanical layouts, understand basic engineering principles.

·         Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and maintain good working relations.

 

MANDATORY:

·         Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering.

·         At least three (3) year’s experience as a Mechanical Designer.

·         U.S. citizenship in order to obtain required security clearances.

 

PREFERRED:

·         Master’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering or related building sciences program.

·         Familiar with NAVFAC, COE, and DOD procedures, programs, methods, regulations and resources.

·         Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification from one of the 50 states or U.S. territories, including Guam.

·         Knowledge of construction and construction methods.
