We are currently seeking a Mechanical Discipline Leader to join our North America RD team at our world headquarters in Perrysburg, Ohio.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Mechanical Discipline Leader is responsible and accountable for activities of the mechanical engineering and design section. The Mechanical Discipline Leader directs section activities through subordinates, to design new products, modify existing designs and provides technical / design support for other RD sections and plants when required. The primary focus of the group is mechanical design in the areas of container forming, glass melting and product inspection. The Mechanical Discipline Leader is also charged with looking after the personal / professional development needs of the group. Mechanical Discipline Leaders set group priorities and utilize resources to accomplish RD objectives according to short-term needs and long-term strategic plans.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:

- Mechanical Discipline Leaders are responsible for the following key functions:
- Directs new process / product development by establishing strategy and providing leadership and organization necessary for success.
- Responsibilities include the design, analysis of machine dynamics, machine controls and the integration of machine components into electro-mechanical system prototype.
- Supports and recommends continuous Company-wide safety and quality improvements.
- Coordinates and develops plans relative to staffing, training, materials, equipment and engineering requirements to ensure the success of the group.
- Foster the further development of a team-based work environment.
- Develops and establishes knowledge of and working relationships with key technologies and suppliers.
- Develops and establishes knowledge of and working relationships with all customers, both internal and external to RD.
- Directs and develops leadership capabilities of the team leaders that oversee the mechanical design activities in the key process RD areas.
- Responsible for developing the technical capabilities of the group to enabling them to successfully complete more technically challenging projects and to improve the overall quality of groups output.
- Responsible establishment of the CAD design standards and continuous improvement of existing standards and design processes.
- Accountable for the technical output of the tasks.
SCOPE AND IMPACT
- Responsible for directing resources within the section to successfully complete all projects from the simplest to the most complex and significant projects.
- Plans and manages independent work within the group and provides guidance in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.
- Devises and implements new approaches to solving problems.
- Provides technical direction to project teams and collaborates with other departments to review technical issues on projects, evaluate requirements and perform design reviews.
- Responsible for the technical quality of the group’s designs and documentation.
- Supports and manages project needs from concept through completion as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics with mechatronics with at least 10+ years industrial experience in mechatronics, robotics and/or machine design and control with at least 5 years of experience in a leadership role.
- Knowledge of IS machine desirable, but not required.
- Working knowledge of analytical and experimental methods for development of dynamical systems, process systems, devices, rotating machinery and/or robotics.
- Experience with procurement, buildup and testing of prototype hardware, instrumentation and software.
- Experience with hands on application of design principles to develop and test advanced prototypes in the areas of dynamical and mechatronic systems such as robotic devices, automation systems or rotating machinery.
- Solid foundation in design, dynamic analysis, and control of mechanical, mechatronic and/or rotating systems.
- Knowledge of electromechanical, pneumatic and other drives and actuators.
- Experience in conceiving, developing and carrying out experiments in component hardware and transferring component level tests into full scale electro-mechanical solutions.
- Experience in analysis and design of machine components; and motion and process control hardware, software and firmware design.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
This job will report within the RD structure. The position will report to the RD Manager for Process Innovation. All engineers within the group will report directly to the Mechanical Discipline Leader. Day to day supervision of individual engineers will be through team leaders.
