pOSITION:              Mechanical Design Engineer

Location:  North Carolina

SUMMARY

As a key member of the product development team, the candidate will work on new product designs and customer specific requirements. Other aspects of the job include assisting in the evaluation of new product opportunities; communicate with the customer in all product phases to ensure that design, performance and documentation requirements are met; initiate and participate in concurrent engineering efforts; create and evaluate conceptual designs; ensure that sufficient testing is accomplished reflecting company product quality standards and customer performance requirements; perform sustaining engineering activities as required; maintains knowledge of and participates in evaluation and implementation of current design/analysis tools and manufacturing methods.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Assist in estimating resources required to complete projects, including labor, materials, necessary skills and duration.

·         Provide input to new product designs and guidance in the completion of qualification programs to ensure goals and objectives are met.

·         Develop schedules (Microsoft project—preferred) for mechanical design elements of new projects and coordinate with Project Engineers leading product development assignments.

·         Perform GDT analysis and generate design reports to summarize critical features and associated risk for tolerance stack up, fit, and manufacturability.

·         Coordinates directly with systems and design engineering personnel to ensure thorough understanding of all interface, performance, materials, finish and all other engineering requirements for a specific design effort.

·         Coordinates directly with responsible design engineer to accumulate all necessary information, including applicable specifications to complete a specific design effort.

·         Coordinates directly with responsible design engineer and stress analyst to design parts, subassemblies and assemblies to meet applicable engineering and system requirements.

·         Coordinates directly with responsible design engineer and/or stress analyst to select materials, parts, fasteners and finishes to meet engineering requirements.

·         Generates and dimensions detailed models and drawings from rough layouts and engineering sketches in sufficient detail for manufacture.

·         Develops multi-view assembly, sub-assembly and detail part drawings per ASME Y14.100, including all drawing types specified in ASME Y14.24.

·         Applies geometric positioning and tolerance per ASME Y14.5 where applicable to the design (GD T) analysis.

·         Verifies accuracy and completeness of engineering drawings prior to release.

·         Revises drawings in accordance with engineering change orders, marked-up print or as directed by supervisor (some design and revisions by hand may be required).

·         Coordinates with responsible engineer and manufacturing personnel or suppliers to resolve design and/or drafting problems during prototype and/or production manufacturing as well as legacy products.

·         Performs other duties and/or tasks that may be assigned on as needed basis.

·         Customer interaction- Work with customer POC to mitigate ambiguity in product requirements.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

·         Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Design Engineering plus 5 + years’ experience in mechanical and electro-mechanical design.

·         Must have experience with all phases of design/development, including testing and stress.  Experience with CATIA V5, FEA, composite analysis and mechanisms preferred.

·         Knowledge of material, manufacturing processes and engineering analysis required.  Problem solving, critical thinking and creativity skills are essential.

·         Must be highly motivated and be a committed team player.

·         Ability to communicate well both written and verbally in English.

·         Experience with SmarTeam PLM is a strong plus.

·         Understanding of Aerospace Environments as per RTCA DO-160/MIL-STD-810.

·         Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
