Senior Mechanical Engineer
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will work as part of the team providing practical and economic design solutions for new components for use in the xDSL Telecom industry. The main duty will be providing mechanical support for a broad range of both new and existing components and products with an aim to maintain Pulse’s superiority in the market. Mentor and coach junior engineers.
EDUCATION:
Minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, with a Masters Degree in Mechanical engineering preferred
EXPERIENCE:
4-7 years overall work experience in a design environment, 7-11 years preferred; 5+ years in plastic moulding and tooling design experience.
KNOWLEDGE:
Understanding of Mechanical Design Principles, the ability to improve current design methods preferred, an understanding of drafting principles, dimensioning and tolerancing. Required technical knowledge includes product, tooling, and fixture design, working knowledge of material selection including metals and non-metals, technical knowledge of design software such as SolidWorks (minimum level 1) and AutoCad (14). Must have an understanding of component manufacturing techniques, such as injection molding, machining, pin insertion, etc An ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, with general knowledge of ISO and similar standards. Printed circuit board layout skills are highly desirable
SKILLS:
· The ability to use ASME Y14.5 and the Document Requirements Manual preferred
· Printed circuit board layout skills desirable
· Methodical with strong project management skills
· Dynamic with ability to see problems, develop solutions and finalise projects
· Team player but able to work independently when required
With worldwide customers and manufacturing sites, an ability to clearly define requirements is critical and this will require good language skills with a professional and confident attitude.
INTERNAL:
Internal relationships to include daily communication with peers, lab operators, engineers, and other departments during the product design phase. Frequent contact with the production plants and sourcing groups regarding new and existing design issues as required
EXTERNAL:
External relationships to include contact with suppliers to discuss materials, designs, schedules and cost. Contact with customers also to be expected
This position is challenged to develop new products within a short amount of time, designed to meet customers’ demands. This position must also interact with production plants in different time zones without the ability to see the product being discussed which requires a great deal of flexibility. Provide support to test group in developing suitable test jigs. Will implement innovative solutions in a timely manner within company guidelines. Must respond to rapidly changing customer needs and increasing competitive pressures. Must manage a large number of designs simultaneously while keeping abreast of the latest materials, suppliers, and technology. Errors in the design of a product may result in field failures, customer line shutdown, retooling costs and leadtime problems. Becoming proficient in simple printed circuit board design.
· Design, evaluate and test new products, including tooling and fixtures
· Conduct lab evaluations of design
· Create printed circuit board designs suitable for manufacture
· Prepare drawing designs and related documentation
· Provide customer and manufacturing support
· Coach and mentor junior engineers
· Specification of components and support of sourcing group to identify suitable parts
· Attending program, staff, design review, company, ISO and group meetings and be an active part of such meetings
· Other duties as assigned
