A talented Engineer with a background in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Physics (or similar) is required to join the development team of a vibrant and award winning space technology company. As the Development Engineer you will be bright with at least a good MEng or preferably a PhD and a good understanding of Electro/Chemical/Mechanical Systems -particularly in experimental test, data analysis, data evaluation and modelling. Ideally you will have experience of batteries, fuel cells or similar power systems, but this is not essential and expertise in other system testing and analysis such as aerospace or automotive systems will be seriously considered

Their world class portfolio of products including their flagship Lithium-ion batteries continue to provide the space industry with innovative solutions that can be used in the ultimate of harsh environments.
To ensure their Lithium -Ion batteries remain THE technical leader within the space industry, they hire and invest in the best people and as such their Battery Development team consists of some of the brightest Engineers and Scientists the industry has to offer.
Through expansion they now require a talented Engineer with to join the Battery Development Team. As a member of the development team you will be running system tests on the cells under extreme environmental conditions then analysing and modelling test data to improve the performance and develop the next generation in batteries.
You will need to have a background in research (perhaps from Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Physics background) which should include data evaluation and modelling. A background in battery technology would be a strong advantage but is certainly not critical as training will be provided if the candidate displays the core skills and a keen interest in the space/battery industry.
As the Battery Development Engineer you will be involved in the following:
- New cell and battery qualification including:
- Environmental and Performance Test definition and management
- Hands on test and inspection work to support activities as required
- Data evaluation including macro coding to streamline work
- Writing and presenting research reports
- Cell performance modelling in some or all the following areas:
- Thermal behaviour
- Mechanical (vibration and structural behaviour)
- Electrical characteristics
- Electro-Chemical performance
- Providing expert technical support to the business engineering and sales teams for:
- Proposal production
- Customer enquires
- Technical problem solving and troubleshooting
To be considered for the role of Battery Development Engineer you need the following:
Education:
- Good Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or perhaps a Physics related discipline or equivalent
Essential Skills
- Demonstrable high level of IT skills for data analysis, modelling, results presentation and reporting using Excel or similar packages
- VBA Macro or other programming experience for data manipulation and modelling
- Methodical approach to testing and organisational skills to maintain traceability, avoid errors and validate work performed
- Project planning and organisational experience
- Time management, problem solving and strong organisation skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication
Desirable Skills:
- Experience of lithium-ion battery or electrochemical system testing
- Knowledge of and familiarity with commercial battery testers and data loggers beneficial
- Material testing techniques e.g. XRF, FTIR, XRD etc
- Experience of the Space Industry
- Experience of Vibration environment
- Operation in vacuum
