JOB FUNCTION:

 

To oversee the technical compliance of a metallurgical testing laboratory. These areas provide quality control support to a high strength, close tolerance, highly engineered aerospace fastener operation. The position must anticipate and solve material and process issues on a daily basis, and be able to function in a challenging and high pace manufacturing environment.  Individual will be responsible for compliance to AS9100 quality system as well as Nadcap MTL accreditation.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Interpret specifications and codes, designate particular test methods and techniques for all Material Control Lab (MCL) testing.  Assist in writing and/or revising MCL test and calibration procedures.

 

Assist MCL staff in the interpretation of blueprints and specifications, the use of testing techniques, and the identification of materials.

 

Supervise training of subordinates in the proper methods and procedures for the assigned areas.  Ensure that quality personnel are knowledgeable of all manufacturing operations.

 

Evaluate MCL and NDT results of non-conforming products and determine what action should be taken.  Submit quality control repairs to the proper department for immediate corrective action.

 

Assist in expediting work and resolve any complex or unusual problems that arise.  Confer with Engineering on problems concerning specification interpretation.  Establish and maintain close working relationships with manufacturing to resolve problems and expedite work, and minimize backlog. 

 

Ensure that all testing equipment is properly calibrated, certified and operated as required.  Review periodically the effectiveness of existing testing equipment and make recommendations to update or revise as necessary.

 

 

Appraise performance of area and institute continuous improvement actions   to improve organization, testing methods, systems, procedures, personnel efficiency and ability to meet quality requirements.

 

Serve as focal for MTL audits conducted by customers, AS9100 registrar and Nadcap.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

B.S. Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science or equivalent. Eight to ten years experience in the field of mechanical and metallurgical testing and quality control.

Broad knowledge of mechanical and metallurgical testing skills, policies and procedures. 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to understand, select, develop and motivate people.  Strong computer skills are a plus along with experience using Six Sigma methods. Must be able to work both independently and in team situations, and function equally well in a professional environment as well as on the shop floor with manufacturing employees.
