This is a term appointment for which all qualified applicants with or without Federal status may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months/years with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. DUTIES: Back to top As a Microbiologist within the Ohio Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: - Plans, conducts, and reports on assigned parts of hydrologic interpretive studies, including environmental microbiology, which adhere to conventional methods of investigation. - Prepare reports that present scientific findings, interpretations, conclusions, and recommendations for complete hydrologic interpretive studies. - Maintains an awareness and understanding of the latest state-of-the-art techniques, instrumentation, and technology applicable to the conduct of hydrologic studies and data collection and analysis activities -Analyze ground water samples for coliphage using single agar layer and enrichment techniques. -Oversee the daily operation of a laboratory. For GS-07: In addition to meeting the basic education as described above, applicants must have one year of specialised experience equal to the GS-5 level. Examples of GS-5 level experience could include taking measurements and collecting information; learning to take proper samples; conducting routine calculating, plotting, and checking of numerical data; preparing graphs and data profiles; and accomplishing routine analyses. This work experience would have involved receiving clear, specific, and detailed instructions as to the methods, procedures, and guidelines to use. For GS-09: Examples of GS-07 level experience could include performing standard tests to assay the potency and purity of the antibiotic components of therapeutic products; to prepare and maintain cultures of tissues or cell lines in vitro; or to perform a variety of diagnostic tests and make macroscopic and microscopic examinations of cultures of numerous species of bacteria and fungi for the purpose of positive identification. For positions involving a substantial amount of work in a specific specialized area or applied field of microbiology, at least 6 months of the experience must either have been in the appropriate area of specialization or applied field of microbiology, or have direct application in the area for which the applicant is being considered. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
