Position Summary:
The Loan Underwriter performs loan underwriting for Conventional, FHA, VA, FHLB, Portfolio and other approved real estate loan products. Underwrites loans and supports the enterprise CLS correspondents in a timely and accurate manner.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Underwrites loans to the Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA) guidelines. Underwriting is both manually and through the FNMA DU automated underwriting system.
- Underwrites loans to the Government National Mortgage Association Guidelines (GNMA). Underwriting is manually and through the FNMA DU underwriting system.
- Performs compliance reviews on underwritten files verifying said files are in compliance with RESPA and TILA.
- Corresponds with correspondents answering underwriting questions.
- Provides underwriting support and training to all other staff and customers as needed.
- Follow prescribed guidelines, receive and review loan applications and associated documentation to insure thoroughness and accuracy.
- Rework loan to new terms or identifies additional conditions as needed.
- Verify loan-to-value ratios, completeness of application information and credit reports.
- Analyze credit reports and associated documentation, analyzes appraisals, qualifies and classifies loans according to Company guidelines.
- Maintain acceptable turnaround times for applications submitted for pre-approval and on funding packages.
- Interact with Quality Control, Compliance, and Funding for problem resolution, risk evaluation and compliance concerns, as needed.
- Assist with the review and underwriting of all loan files with respect to asset quality and compliance to meet predetermined goals and objectives.
- Work with processing, closing and operations to ensure efficient deal flow and processing and to stay within regulatory compliance.
- Identify and report opportunities for processing improvements with respect to your activity.
- Provide accurate and timely information to Senior management as requested.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment with quotas and goals

- Master knowledge of FNMA/FHLMC underwriting guidelines.
- Master knowledge of FHA and VA underwriting guidelines.
- Master knowledge of Fair Lending Act, RESPA and TILA.
- Experienced with DU and LP automated underwriting systems.
- A thorough understanding of processing and closing functions and a general
understanding of the entire real estate lending process.
- Sound Personal Computing skills, including MS-Office and Loan Application/Processing software.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in Conventional, FHA and VA Mortgage Loan Underwriting.
Education: College Degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or Business Administration preferred. Certifications in Loan Processing and Underwriting are a plus.
Interpersonal Skills: The ability to build rapport, act as internal consultant, gather information and respond to information requests, resolve problems, and manage conflict are all important to the position.
