Job Description:
Manages and coordinates the activities of multi-disciplined project(s) and/or technical team(s) from concept design to production of medical devices involving external and internal customers. Includes all aspects of development such as product specification, design, testing, documentation, validation, pilot manufacturing, and sustaining engineering. Primary duties include managing the engineering aspects of new precision injection molding projects including being the primary technical interface with the customer. Engineering aspects include process design and development; tooling design concepts and procurement; automation concept and procurement; development of control plans through the use of PFMEA; molding trials; coordination of metrology requirements; product submission to the customer and assisting with transition into manufacturing.
Skills/Experience Requirements:
The Molding Engineer manages technical projects in the molding/manufacturing areas related to new, as well as existing equipment and tooling installation, process and quality improvements, new materials testing and cost reduction programs.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering or a related field. Must have a minimum of 7 years experience in managing the engineering aspects of precision, high cavitation injection and blow molding projects, knowledge of injection molding equipment, inspection procedure and SPC analysis also strongly preferred. Must be able to interface with other internal and external departments affected by design and development experience with statistical analysis of product and process. Must have proven ability to participate in team atmosphere, exhibit and create a sense of urgency and maintain effective working relationships with peers, customers and vendors.
Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Process design and development, tooling/automation design, procurement and qualification
- Molding and tooling process troubleshooting
- Knowledge of plastics processes, resins, tooling, FDA QSR's and ISO requirements a plus
- Concurrent management of multiple projects
- Development of mold capacity and budget plans for expense and capital spending
- Creating and maintaining project schedules, overseeing cross functional team activities to achieve program objectives
- Management of molding suppliers to meet quality and cost objectives
- Leading cross functional team failure investigations
- Knowledge of six-sigma troubleshooting and lean manufacturing processes a plus
- Familiarity and ability to perform failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA)
- Ability to thoroughly document design decision history, test and observation activities in a formal manner using division document systems, project notes or formal test reports
- Build, test and evaluate prototypes
- Write draft design verification/validation protocols
- Write draft design verification/validation reports
- Seek the appropriate incremental approvals in a cross-functional team environment.
Position requires 3+ years plastic injection mold process troubleshooting. Prefer experience with 2-4 shot injection and rotational molding. Key requirements: BSME or technical discipline required, experience with statistical analysis of product and process. Must have proven ability to participate in team atmosphere, exhibit and create a sense of urgency and maintain effective working relationships with peers, customers and vendors.
