Network Architect

Position Overview:

Architects ensure the overall quality of large technology programs and projects, organized into several architectures each with their respective products, business units, development managers, and operational teams. These projects support multiple products, in multiple business units – internal and external, involving a significant portion of our overall business. Network Architects are responsible for providing end-to-end Network Designs, Specifications and Service Flows and providing overall technical leadership across these teams by collaborating with Network Design Engineers, Operations Leads and other contributing team members across Clearwire. Architects influence and impact multiple areas of our business and have a significant impact on crucial business objectives. Solutions made by Clearwire’s Architects are innovative, thorough and practical, and provide breakthrough results.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the architectural definition and implementation of end-to-end OSS network systems, collaboratively developing technical architectures through definition of solutions, patterns, and strategy as well as technology trends, technology standards, and application development.
• Design complex network management systems at the core network design level.
• Make strategic technology choices, directly supervising the quality of designs and implementation inside and between components.
• Collaboratively work to and refine a set of network and architecture principles by which the organization defines and measures behaviors and activities.
• Collaboratively work within a defined governance process and work to refine and improve that process.
• Develop and maintain a high-level representation of the current state of the technical architecture
• Propose and proactively drive to conclusion implementation plans towards moving from current technical architecture towards the future state.
• Evaluate and anticipate impact of technical solutions on related projects and existing or future architecture.
• Be responsible for reviewing and approving technical projects and core network designs for any new system development and ensure adherence to strategic direction.
• Guide, mentor and coach our talented group of engineers and rely on their technical expertise in reaching decisions. This will require strong leadership qualities, impeccable cross-functional management capabilities, including a hands-on, non-bureaucratic leadership style, to include open and frequent communications at all levels of the organization and a genuine sensitivity to the development needs of the organization.
• Lead and foster the development of high performing technical teams to meet strategic objectives – identifying weaknesses or gaps in the process and driving improvements on them.
• Influence, identify, and recruit technical leaders into the organization to insure the appropriate levels of quality on architecture(s).
• Research, collaborate, and influence 3rd party vendors to develop innovative solutions to complex problems
• Collaborate effectively with peer Architects and Network and IT Design Engineers to solve complex problems spanning their respective areas and resolve technological disagreement with informed, rational solutions.
• Coach, mentor, and delegate to engineers facilitating their development.

Qualifications:

• At least 7 years of experience designing and implementing outstanding technology systems and infrastructure design
• Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS or better) in computer science, information management or a relevant discipline or experience with Network management systems and architectures, element management systems, performance management systems equivalent experience. Masters degree preferred.
• At least 3 years of hands on network design and implementation
• Experience implementing network security designs and principles
• Project management experience a plus
• Knowledge of Internet technologies in various IETF RFCs, Open Mobile Alliance and WiMAX Forum standards, excellent understanding of TCP/IP networking, Web Services and SOA, mobile networks, specifically WiMAX and LTE, to have a standards based approach in designing solutions
• Knowledge and experience in network modeling and design, and infrastructure development to include security, capacity, scale and performance analysis.
• Proven experience in developing technical architectures as part of the overall enterprise architecture.
• Design experience in large scale systems in an environment involving customer premises/handset, PC based, web based and hosted service solutions.
• Experience in leading and/or participating in Joint Application Design (JAD) session with business customers, business analysts, and DBAs in order to derive data requirements and data design information
• Demonstrated ability to fully document technical specifications and related project or systems level documentation; Clear documentation and communication of objectives, requirements, and designs to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience estimating capital, schedule, and human resource costs of proposed objectives.
• Compare, contrast, and prioritize among alternative approaches to meet those objectives while assessing risk both quantitatively and qualitatively.
• Demonstrate seasoned judgment to suggest approaches that optimize among customer needs, business constraints, and technological realities.
• Influence and communicate effectively with non-technical audiences including senior product and business management.
• Comfortably move between highly varying levels of abstraction within business and product strategy, technical design (micro/macro), and implementation.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Must be able to work effectively within a team and inspire team members
• Must have the ability to work collaboratively across the organization toward the specific objectives of a particular business or Technology domain
• Understanding of systems infrastructure and related service delivery processes (e.g. ITIL)
• Proficient at implementing complex business logic requirements for large-scale business applications; i.e., high volume, complex service flows, and (or) high availability (24/7)
• Proficiency with web technologies (2.0 and prior)
