Network Engineer

The responsibility of this position is for designing, implementing and supporting the data communication infrastructure used to support Grainger's business objectives. This position will ensure maximum availability, reliability, and performance of related infrastructure, systems and network-related applications. An Engineer is required to possess knowledge of Wide Area Network (WAN) and Local Area Network (LAN) concepts and related hardware and software. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, working with technologies such as voice over IP (VoIP), routers, hubs, layer 2-7 switches, wireless access points, network management platforms, network protocols like TCP/IP and IPX, wireless networking, and the ability to track and trace problems using network packet captures. They must be familiar with WAN technologies such as Frame Relay, SONET, T1, DS3, ISDN and ATM. Engineers should exhibit a strong understanding of LAN concepts such as trunking, spanning tree, and layer 3 switching. Advanced Engineering includes network capacity planning, network performance and measurement skills, ability to resolve complex problems, diagnostics and debugging; an understanding of distributed systems management techniques; understanding of change management and problem management concepts. Must be able to design, implement, and support to design, data network topologies. Strong network management and an understanding and working knowledge of UNIX.skills are also a must. Designs and implements standards and performance requirements to maximize reliability, functionality, and integrity while minimizing costs and cycle time for both business-related projects and infrastructure build-out. Designs and implements flexible, cost effective network-related projects to clients and business departments to meet business and customer service levels and expectations. Designs infrastructure and related systems to meet security requirements. Designs, installs and maintains recovery processes to minimize disruptions. Resolves problems and prevents reoccurrence. Develops a strong working knowledge of products, services, and industry trends to select appropriate technologies to meet infrastructure requirements. Develops work plans to manage resources and communicates project status. Communicates with all areas to ensure efficient and effective handoff of problems Develops, defines, and communicates training materials and policies relating to their specialty Initiates interaction with business partners to research and identify alternatives which will provide cost savings and/or increased operating efficiencies. Provides consulting services to other areas as required. Participates in projects as they pertain to the needs of the position. Performs tasks as assigned by management. Researches, resolves and responds to questions ranging from day-to-day production issues to highly complex technology solutions relating to business strategy. Monitor networks for performance and availability, and suggests process improvements for all related tasks.
