New York State Licensed Clinical Technologist - Microbiology

Health care As a Medical Technologist specializing in Microbiology, you will process clinical samples for microbiological analysis using a variety of automated, semi-automated, and manual methods. Be able to learn new methods and procedures, and to maintain expertise through continuing education. THIS IS A PART-TIME POSITION Processing and evaluation of microbiology cultures. 1. Initial processing of specimens for Bacteriology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Parasitology and Diagnostic Immunology. 2. Differentiation of normal flora from Pathogenic organisms. 3. Knowledge of variety biochemical tests plus familiarity with equipment specific for microbiology labs (Vitek, Microscan, Bac T alert, MB-Bact, Gen Probe is desirable). 4. Knowledge of susceptibility testing and it's interpretation including Kirby-Bauer methods, mic testing, Vitek and/or Microscan, E-strips. 5. Knowledge of "Universal Precautions." 6. Ability to identify ova and parasites from stool specimens, blood borne parasites such as malaria, and the various stains (Trichrome) used in Parasitology. 7. Knowledge of Mycology including dermatophytes, yeast, filamentous fungi, di morphic fungi, KOH preps, slide cultures, calcofluor white staining. 8. Knowledge of Mycobacteriology including fluorescent staining procedures, techniques, standard biochemical tests such as niacin, nitrate, catalase, urea, arylsulfatase, Tween hydrolysis, and special safety precautions. 9. General knowledge of Diagnostic Immunology including RPR, Latex agglutination tests, Hepatitis, VDRL, Streptozyme, EIA experience desirable. 10. Familiarity with the use of Laboratory Information Systems (Sunquest desirable). Bachelor's Degree in Science, Medical Technology or Biology, required. Minimum of one (1) year experience in specialized or technical field, required. Microbiology experience, preferred. State of New York Education Department License for Clinical Laboratory Technologist, required. Certification by a National registry, preferred (e.g. ASCP, NCA). Knowledge of automated (instruments), semi-automated, manual methods and Laboratory Information Systems. Ability to communicate and interact effectively. Knowledge of a variety of biochemical tests plus familiarity with equipment specific for microbiology labs (Vitek, Microscan panel, Bact/Alert, MB/Bact, Gen Probe), required.
