Responsible for the planning, administration, and evaluation of patient care. Works collaboratively in identifying overall patient, staff and unit needs and recommends and implements strategies to meet those needs. Ensures the clinical competence of all care givers respomsible for direct patient care. Works collaboratively with other health care providers; facilitated inter-departmental communication; and mentors staff in coordinating the efforts of all disciplines into a cohesive plan for patients. Responsible for the unit-based orientation of new personnel, ongoing staff development, and quality assurance/quality improvement activities. Also responsible for the recruitment and retention needs of the department. Operationalizes the core values of the hospital by developing and sustaining an environment that supports excellence in clinical practice and the care of patients.
1. Facilitates flow throughout the Emergency Department including, but not limited to:
a. Resolving conflict related to operational issues, (including RNS and MDs). The flow manager has ultimate decision making authority.
b. Facilitates debriefings after conflicts arise to ensure that all stakeholders have an opportunity to review concerns.
c. Demonstrates respectful communication
d. Manages all resources to support thru-put of patients
e. Evaluates capacity and identifies capacity concerns early
f. Manages changes in daily staffing schedule and interacts with the staffing office
2. Collaborates with key departments to coordinate resources and communication.
These include, but are not limited to: Admitting, Lead Attending, Care Facilitator, Transport etc.
3. Coordinates with Care Coordination to process pre- registered patients.
4. Interfaces with patient access services to provide through-put and bed utilization services to enhance the patient experience, while optimizing patient flow.
5. Supervises and directs interdisciplinary Emergency Department team to ensure timely disposition of patients, discharges or bed requests to inpatient units.
6. Supervises and directs the ED team and team to ensure smooth and rapid admission to the Surge Pod.
7. Monitors to ensure the hand off process is completed in a timely manner to facilitate throughput and the advancement of care.
8. Provides management support as needed to nursing staff in collaboration with the Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department.
9. Continuously assesses capacity of the Emergency Department to care safely and effectively for patients and makes timely and thoughtful recommendations to respond to Surge.
10. Leads the coordination of surge responses and ongoing evaluates the response process.
11. Analyzes and provides feedback to nurse manager regarding trends in patient acuity and census and its impact on staffing patterns to assure the needed adjustments in resource allocations.
12. Authorizes hours worked by nursing staff, including any overtime. Direct recipient of sick and tardy calls.
13. Assumes accountability for evaluation of performance under the delegation/direction of the nurse manager
14. Participates :in the selection, supervision and of staff
full time with the ability to work all shifts to meet the needs of the unit.
Qualifications:
Current MA RN license required. BSN required, Master's Degree preferred. Must have demonstrated clinical competence in area of nursing practice and demonstrated ability and potential in managerial/leadership competency. Specialty certification preferred. Minimum of 1-2 years management experience preferred.
• Education: Graduate of an approved school of nursing, BSN required. MSN preferred. CEN preferred. Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Massachusetts.
• Experience: 5 years emergency nursing experience required. Must have extensive knowledge of patient flow and emergency department operations. Leadership experience preferred.
• Continually updates clinical knowledge and skills through formal and informal education and review of the current literature. Member of Emergency Nursing Association preferred.
• Must work well independently, have sound decision making skills and work effectively when required to make and facilitate complex decisions. Excellent communication skills and strong team player.
