Obstetrician

12-24 month placement

Background
Maternal mortality and morbidity are largely preventable tragedies, yet women in Papua New Guinea are at great risk during pregnancy, because many do not have access to the necessary health care solutions that can prevent and manage complications. Women in the rural areas do not have access to adequate pre and post natal care, skilled birth attendants, safe and clean birthing equipment, supplies and facilities, including emergency care if they need it. Based in Mendi General Hospital, you will be working in the obstetrics unit in a dual role as a service provider and a capacity builder. You will deliver obstetrics services and also provide capacity building to the resident doctor and other health staff in the hospital and health centres through service provision and necessary mentoring on patients management.

What does the role involve:
Provide consultations for all patients in the gynaecology and obstetrics unit
Teaching clinical and preventative services to medical officers, medical students and pre-medical personnel
Mentor/train resident doctors through service provision in the obstetrics unit
Support patient management through regular visits to district hospitals and health centres
Advise the CEO and hospital board on major policy matters on standards of care and improvement programs
Undertake the responsibility of provincial consultant within the speciality

Skills, qualifications and experience required:
You can apply for this role if you are a registered medical practitioner with a MBBS degree or equivalent with a post graduate master’s degree in the specialist area of obstetrics/gynaecology and have 5 years of specialist training. It is desirable that you will have training and mentoring skills to coach resident doctors and other health personnel on obstetrics services. You should have good people skills, self-management, be able to structure your work, work confidently with and report to a range of stakeholders including senior officers. You should have a large amount of patience, diplomacy, flexibility and adaptability along with cultural sensitivity.

And the rest....
Mendi is the capital of the Southern Highlands Province and is wedged between impressive limestone peaks.
