Oil Markets Analyst - Retail Fuels Focus
Location: London or Edinburgh
Role Purpose
The Oil Markets Analyst will take a leading role in the research and analysis of retail and commercial fuels markets both in Europe and beyond, complementing the similar work undertaken by refining and demand analysts, to provide input into Wood Mackenzie’s suite of research products covering the global downstream oil industry. The successful candidate will in particular have responsibility for the fuels marketing analysis contained within the successful European Downstream Oil Service, will contribute to consultancy assignments, and will also be closely involved in the development of Wood Mackenzie’s global fuels marketing expertise. The role offers the opportunity for an individual to build and broaden their existing energy knowledge within this segment of the downstream oil value chain.
Main Responsibilities
- Researching developments and trends in the fuels marketing sector. This will include both primary and secondary (desk) research to gather information on assets (e.g. retail service stations, oil storage terminals), companies (both refiners and non-refining oil product distributors), oil product prices and markets.
- Providing high quality, written analysis for publication in the evolving suite of downstream subscription research products, with a current emphasis on the existing Downstream Oil Service for Europe.
- Updating both data and analysis on a regular basis will be an important part of the job, providing a platform for further investigation of developing trends
- Contributing to the overall development of the downstream product suite as Wood Mackenzie enhances the delivery and coverage of its downstream research products
- Supporting the consulting side of the business through contributions to bespoke projects for a wide variety of clients
- Responding to client enquiries and ad hoc requests in a timely manner, and supporting sales initiatives undertaken by Wood Mackenzie’s client management team
- Developing relationships with industry contacts, data providers and clients, including presenting to clients in meetings and via webcalls as appropriate
Key Competencies
- An understanding of the downstream oil sector in Europe gained from relevant industry experience, preferably including exposure to retail and/or commercial fuels markets.
- A basic understanding of oil product market price formation in European markets.
- Strong analytical skills
- Strong organisation and planning skills and the ability to manage own workload within sometimes tight timescales
- Excellent communication skills, enabling you to relate to experts internally and to a range of personnel in client organisations to senior management level
- Fluency in English,, a good grasp of at least one other European language, and competency in writing reports in English
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills, including competency in the use of Microsoft Office computer software such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
- The ability to work as part of a team involving multiple locations and time zones, including willingness to travel to Wood Mackenzie and client offices
