Operational Risk Manager
Role Purpose
The individual will take a key role in overseeing the Operational Risk and Internal Control framework within the Private Banking operations of Europe and the Middle East (excluding Switzerland). The individual will be responsible for providing assurance that key controls are designed and operating effectively through monitoring activities, undertaking reviews and investigations as required. They will also be expected to lead and contribute to global ORIC initiatives aimed at improving the Operational Risk framework. The countries covered by this role are: Monaco, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Turkey, Israel and the Middle East ; however the incumbent will form part of the wider PBGB ORIC team and, from time to time, may be required to become involved in work in relation to the private banking operations in the UK and Channel Islands.
Key Accountabilities
- The incumbent will play a key role in managing the Operational Risk profile across PB Continental Europe (ex Switzerland) and PB Middle East (‘PB CEME’). This will have a direct impact on profitability and the achievement of high level business objectives
- The individual will play a key advisory role in all PB CEME strategic business development/change projects to ensure the internal control environment is being built in accordance with HSBC control standards
- The individual will be responsible for oversight and challenge of senior management within PB CEME discharging their responsibilities for managing operational risk within stated organisational appetite
- The individual will be responsible for oversight of the Business Risk and Control programmes within PB CEME
- Gain an in-depth understanding of the various businesses and becoming accepted as a trusted advisor, thus contributing towards reducing their risk profile. Ensure line management effectively carry out their control monitoring responsibilities through regular challenge, assurance and validation
- Executing ad hoc project work, thematic reviews and special investigation as agreed in liaison with business management and Head of PBGB ORIC
- Ensure that Operational Risk incidents are highlighted, suitable actions are identified and implemented and that any lessons learned are applied across all businesses
- Involvement in development of Key Risk Indicator methodology and development of reporting tools in order to improve the quality of information provided to the relevant businesses
- Contribute, as required, to the broader programme to implement an AMA-compliance framework and capital model within HSBC
- Assist in the roll out of Operational Risk Best Practice for PB CEME
Experience required
- Considerable industry experience in Operational Risk Management, ideally within a top tier Private Bank
- Understanding of operational risk frameworks in major financial services firms
- Language skills essential - candidate should be fluent in French and/ or German
- Candidate would need to be a team player with excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills and confidence to deal with senior staff to sell the benefits of OR management and challenge their operating environment
- Project management skills a plus
- The role will involve a significant amount of travel and short term overseas assignments – mainly to Continental Europe, but possibly as part of the wider PBGB Global ORIC teams
- The candidate would have participated in review assignments in previous roles
