We are looking for a technically savvy but operationally disciplined person to help develop, implement, and manage Virtualization Service within MSIT. The goal is establish a centrally managed, shared computing model that dramatically increases the utilization of processing resources in both production and lab environments here at Microsoft. Leveraging technologies and services such as Hyper-V and our Storage Utility service, we expect to not only substantially reduce the money MS spends on computing resources, but also improve service levels in terms of overall effectiveness and availability.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Provide support of the operational process for Hyper-V/ IT Cloud service at MS.
• Work with other MSIT groups and pilot early adopters to drive and refine the operation of the service.
• Contribute to service metrics and standard reporting scorecards that accurately represent the health of and participation in the Compute Utility service.
• Contribute to annual Service Improvement Plans that increase effectiveness, efficiency and participation, or decrease risks and exceptions to standard policy or procedures.
• Contribute to definition and writing of troubleshooting guides that address Virtual Machine differences from physical servers.
• Contribute to a tools strategy for managing the environment, which includes exception management that lowers operational costs and increases client satisfaction.
General responsibilities include:
Ongoing service audits containing analytical and evaluative information for use by others. Specific examples include, but are not limited to the following:
• Status reports
• Execution of escalation and move/add/change activities
• Break/fix and routine maintenance coordination
• Root cause step-back analysis reports
• Contribute to and writing of TSGs and SOPs
• Contribute to lifecycle activities on VS Host and for VM Guests
o Tactical capacity management
o Tactical availability management – Downtime/maintenance coordination to meet or exceed SLAs
o Compliance management – Adherence to platform standards and security requirements
o Direct involvement with ongoing development of utility platforms – Beta testing and deployment of future Windows and Virtual Server products and evaluation of new consolidation techniques
Core Job Requirements:
Minimum of 2-5 years’ experience with a combination of the following:
• Operations in an Enterprise scale data center
• Experience in infrastructure operations processes and implementation of projects
• Specialized knowledge in one or more of the following, Windows Server OS, Virtual Server, IP networking, server hardware and storage, computer security principles and practices.
General Qualifications:
BS/BA in Computer Science, Engineering, Business or related field or equivalent in work experience. MCSE (Windows 2000 or above) certification is desirable. Server and storage hardware, CISSP or CCNA/CCNE networking certification/ 0accreditation a plus.
