Summary
Hypertherm is committed to being a good steward of the environment and we are on a journey to limit our landfill waste production. As a part of this journey we are looking for a Packaging Engineer to develop new packaging or improve existing packaging for materials and products transported both within and outside of Hypertherm. The packaging solutions will improve safety, reduce costs, reduce defects, and reduce our environmental footprint. In this position, you will have a major role in defining and deploying the returnable and sustainable packaging strategy throughout Hypertherm and our global value stream. Major responsibilities include:
Packaging Design: Create new packaging designs by defining engineering specifications to meet lean operational and/or sustainable marketing requirements. Balance cost, function, and environmental footprint in design decisions to meet needs of suppliers, carriers, receiving, operations, and customers. Verify designs against function, robustness, environmental, and cost specifications to ensure that designs perform as intended; prepare testing documentation for design review. Ensure that the packaging of new products is designed and tested within the new product development process.
Returnable Packaging Logistics: Design and implement systems to manage returnable packaging. Coordinate logistics of returnable packaging with suppliers and across business/functional teams.
Packaging Strategy: Create a packaging strategy that interweaves and complements the environmental sustainability, lean operations and logistics, and branding goals.
Project Management and Communication: Communicate regularly with team leaders and other associates on progress within the work plan to ensure coordination across the project team. Interface effectively and professionally with MPE's, SC/SBM's, Production TL's, Procurement, Materials, and Fulfillment.
Tactical Quality Support: Support Materials/Fulfillment/Production when presented with a quality issue related to packaging. Prioritize work to identify the root cause and create a corrective plan that ensures the timely and effective resolution of quality issues.
Subject Matter Expert: Work directly with suppliers across our supply chain to provide packaging expertise and provide support to supply chain professionals at Hypertherm. Participate in Subject Matter Expert/Technology/Discipline groups on a regular basis to share knowledge and to take advantage of available cross-team talent/resources.
Continuous Improvement: Prioritize, manage, quantify, track, and report all packaging improvement projects. Continuously improve existing methods and processes to facilitate efficient delivery of high quality products to customers
Education/Experience :
- B.S. in Packaging Engineering (or related field)
- 4+ years of packaging-related experience in a Business to Business (B to B) industrial setting (not food or pharmaceutical)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Background in and proven track record of applying engineering skills to packaging design and implementation having a focus on environmental sustainability and reduction of environmental footprint
- Knowledge of material handling and flow principles, transportation and logistics, process engineering, and industrial engineering
- Understanding of and experience with design of transportation and logistics systems to handle returnable packaging solutions
- Practical experience with product/package shock vibration testing
- Lean manufacturing (including value stream mapping, visual workplace, poke yoke)
- Structured problem solving
- Project management experience
- MS Office
- Written and oral communication, presentation, in both informal and formal settings
Preferred Experience:
- Master's Degree in related field
- Experience with applying Cradle to Cradle (or similar eco-label) certification to product/package development
- Concentration or minor in environmental engineering or environmental science
- Project Management Certification
- Lean-Six Sigma Green Belt Certification, or ability to achieve within 12 months of hiring
- Seven+ years related experience
- Design for Manufacturability/Design for Assembly experience
- Application of Failure Modes Effects Analysis to packaging design
- Solidworks
