Park Ranger - Interpreters connect people to parks. They play a key role in ensuring that visitors have a meaningful, satisfying, and safe park experience, help visitors decide how to spend their time in the park, and inform them about the wonders that await their discovery. Park Ranger - Interpreters are specially trained to engage the public so that each park visitor can find a personal connection with the meanings and values found in the places and stories of that park. They help visitors explore the many dimensions of parks by introducing them to a variety of perspectives. By providing the opportunity for visitors to care about the places they visit, they promote stewardship and the opportunity for those visitors to care for park resources. This Park Ranger, GS-0025-07 position will be filled under a TERM appointment not-to-exceed (NTE) thirteen months, but this TERM appointment may be extended up to a total of four years depending on workload and funding. In addition this Park Ranger, GS-0025-07 position is seasonal in nature and is being advertised as being "Subject-to-Furlough" which means the work of this position is seasonal in nature and does not provide for employment on a full-time year-around basis. A Subject-to-furlough (STF) position can provide the incumbent with work that will last at least thirteen pay periods (26 weeks), but the work period will not exceed twenty-four pay periods (48 weeks) per year. This STF position is expected to include paid work periods up to sixteen pay periods (32 weeks) per year and will have the incumbent being placed in non-duty / non-pay status up to ten pay periods per year (20 weeks) per year. This period in non-pay / non-pay status will generally occur between November and March each year. The period in paid status and the period in non-duty / non-pay status may vary slightly year to year and will be contingent upon funding and operational needs. Position requires paddling experience and small water craft safety training DUTIES: Back to top This is Park Ranger, GS-0025-07 TERM position is primarily an interpretive position is predominantly responsible for preparing and presenting interpretive programs such as multi-media shows, hikes, impromptu talks and canoe trips, on both the natural and cultural history of Cape Cod National Seashore. The incumbent will routinely staff a very busy visitor center desk, providing trip planning guidance to visitors. - 60% The incumbent is responsible for performing administrative duties, e.g., scheduling, gathering routine information for reports, compilation of statistical data, planning and coordinating events and programs, etc. - 20% The incumbent will also coordinate and participate in the district canoe program, including preparations for seasonal startup and close-down procedures, safety of the program, training of staff involved in the program, and input towards planning and evaluating the program, and leading organized canoe programs. - 10% PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over sandy, uneven, of rough surfaces, carrying backpacks, canoes, tools, equipment, etc. The incumbent will be leading canoeing trips that will require paddling a canoe in strong currents and windy conditions, entering the water in cases of emergencies, and providing assistance to trip participants. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomfort unpleasantness, and often under adverse weather conditions, of ten, including exposure to temperatures ranging above 90 degrees . The Incumbent will be required to walk long distances in soft sand, be exposed to biting and stinging insects including mosquitoes, horse flies, and deer ticks. AREA INFORMATION: Cape Cod National Seashore is located on the outer edge of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The duty station is Eastham, MA (approximately 30 miles from Hyannis and 100 miles from Boston) or Provincetown, MA (approximately 50 miles from Hyannis and 120 miles from Boston). The park is known for its beautiful ocean beaches, fresh water ponds, marshes, bay beaches, woodlands, and dunes. Cape Cod has a rich cultural history and the "lower" cape is home to many art galleries, museums, and regional theaters. Orleans (abutting Eastham) and Provincetown are the principle shopping areas providing all normal services. Government housing may be available. Public transportation is limited. Examples of specialized experience could include park guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archaeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and/or implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work.
