As a Park Ranger in this position, protecting the resources will be your main focus. You will patrol backcountry areas, protect park resources and visitors, apprehend violators, enforce park rules and regulations, provide emergency services, manage wildlife/human interactions on the roadways or in campgrounds, and encourage visitors to develop a sense of stewardship for park resources. You will also provide information to visitors about park resources. DUTIES: Back to top MAJOR DUTIES: The incumbent serves as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer commissioned with responsibility for performing duties including detection and investigation of violation of the Federal criminal laws, and the apprehension and detention of violators. Patrols the historic site grounds enforcing rules and regulations and protecting park resources. Makes frequent contact with the park visitors and presents accurate information about the site. Assist Park Guards with security operations at the site. May perform limited interpretive programs on a variety of topics to diverse audiences. Interpretive contacts will be make through formal tours, talks and living history activities as well as through informal means. Responds to emergency incidents and provides care or guidance appropriate with incumbents level of training. May work a variety of shifts to provide necessary staffing levels at the site. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Rigorous field work requires above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. This includes prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring agility and dexterity. Duties often involve working in isolated outdoor environments while exposed to severe weather conditions. Dangerous persons must be physically confronted, subdued, and apprehended many of whom are known to carry weapons. There is a high-stress component associated with much of the incumbent's work assignment. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Duties require extended periods of outdoor work and exposure to conditions including temperatures well below freezing to in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Investigations are conducted on foot, in four-wheel drive vehicles, or other forms of conveyance in remote back country settings. Emergency service and law enforcement work requires entry into hazardous environments, exposure to dangerous persons, animals, and substances, and potential exposure to infectious diseases. Long periods of surveillance work may be required in cramped or unpleasant locations and under unpleasant conditions. A wide range of personal protective equipment and clothing is required to be used and work, some of which may be uncomfortable, hot or inconvenient to wear. Adherence to specific safety procedures and other precautions is required. AREA INFORMATION: Fort Laramie National Historic Site was the most vital post of the westward movement in the 1800's. The site consists of 46 historic structures and 832 acres. Fort Laramie has a budget of approximately 1.6 million dollars, plus additional project monies. The current staff has 17 permanent employees and 1 term employee. We are located in southeastern Wyoming, 3 miles west of the village of Fort Laramie, and 23 miles west of Torrington (the county seat, population 5,700). The small towns have post office facilities, stores, schools and churches. In addition to these, Torrington has medical facilities, and Junior College. Recreational opportunities abound. We are also 50 miles west of Scottsbluff, NE; 100 miles north of Cheyenne, WY; and approximately 3 ½ hours from Denver, CO. No government housing is available but reasonable housing is available in local communities. Previous possession (within the past three years) of a NPS Type I or II Law Enforcement Commission.
