Part-Time Bronchoscopy Technician

UPMC Presbyterian is hiring a part-time bronchoscopy technician to help support the day-to-day operations of the Bronchoscopy Service Department for its Oakland location. The shift for this position will be 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The bronchoscopy technician oversees patient care functions during bronchoscopies on adult patients, some of which have life-threatening pulmonary disease, and provides technical services in cleaning, calibrating, troubleshooting and maintaining a diverse inventory of complex technical laboratory equipment. The technician also participates in the ongoing evaluation and continuous improvement of the quality of bronchoscopic procedures and systems. Responsibilities -Support the mission, purpose and goals of the Comprehensive Lung Center and the UPMC Health System by demonstrating a positive attitude characterized by caring, concern and support for patients, visitors, medical staff and coworkers. -Prepare supplies/equipment and leak tests bronchoscopes prior to patient arrival to ensure that the procedure begins at the designated time. -Prepare patients for procedures by greeting the patients upon arrival in the department, asking patients if there are any questions about the procedure, checking orders and retrieving lab values. -Support the patient during bronchoscopy procedures by anticipating physician requests, assisting with specimen acquisition and documenting vital signs; documents vital signs and oxygen delivery when the nurse coordinator is unavailable. -Inventory laboratory areas and mobile carts; order and log medical/surgical supplies, linens and stock supplies. -Maintain a clean, orderly and safe procedure room environment by cleaning equipment, leak-testing bronchoscopies, and ensuring delivery/pickup of bronchoscopes to and from Central Sterile. -Prepare bronchoscopy suites for procedures according to department policy and infection control guidelines. -Calibrate and troubleshoot equipment by cleaning and adjusting bronchoscopes, light sources, oximeters, fluoroscopy, lead aprons, EKG monitors, sound and video equipment, scope cases, before, during and after procedures according to a maintenance schedule. -Identify equipment malfunctions. -Implement action plans for supply and equipment use and repair schedules. -Complete post-bronchoscopy specimen and data collection activities by processing and delivering specimens, completing paperwork, entering charges into CLINIPAC, preparing requisitions for Virology, Cytology, Bacteriology and Microbiology, distributing flowsheets and recording procedures in the bronchoscopy; maintain reliable records for information retrieval and fiscal control. -Contact patient care units and hospital departments to retrieve and assemble patient information, including chest films, PFT folders and laboratory results. -Call for escort services to assist in getting the patient to and from the department. -Maintain the medical record system in the Comprehensive Lung Center. -Maintain competencies, which include care of the adult and geriatric patient. -Relieve the Medical Assistant II in the Comprehensive Lung Center when assigned. Basic Qualifications -High school diploma or equivalent required. -Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant course preferred. -CPR certification required. -Prior patient care or technical experience is preferred. -Demonstrates ability to read, write and speak English. -Medical terminology a plus. -Must be able to interact with unstable patients and operate complex medical electronic equipment.
