POSITION PURPOSE:
The Pharmacy Technician provides a high level of customer service and performs (under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist) activities related to prescription order processing, inventory management, preparing billing and processing transactions on an electronic cash register. The Pharmacy Technician reports to the Pharmacy Manager.
JOB DUTIES: Safeway Pharmacy Technicians are generally responsible for completing the following job duties:
- Be familiar with and follow all Safeway Best Practice pharmacy procedures.
- Ensure each customer has a positive experience in our store by demonstrating skills consistent with Safeway’s philosophy of providing superior customer service.
- Assists Pharmacist in filling prescriptions and updating patient profiles under direct Pharmacist’s supervision, based on the extent allowable by State/Federal law. Retrieves, pours, counts, labels and reconstitutes prescription medications.
- Access, input, and retrieve information on pharmacy computer system in order to maintain accurate records and create labels for prescriptions, which includes typing dosage instructions, name of drug, and quantity as required by abbreviated or symbolized information written on physicians' orders.
- Receives refill requests from patients and obtains authorization for refills from physician’s offices.
- Prepares third-party insurance claims.
- Orders, receives and stocks prescription drugs and supplies.
- Replaces stock in displays surrounding the pharmacy area.
- Counts stock and enters data into computer to maintain inventory records for pharmacy.
- Performs electronic transactions using a cash register in processing payments for store products, including those for our pharmacy and wellness services.
- Exercises discretion and confidentiality with all patient information.
- Follows proper pharmacy and general safety and security procedures and processes.
- Promptly report to the pharmacist all pharmacy complaints and inquires concerning prescriptions or prescription medication. Notify the pharmacist when agents from any regulatory agency or law officers contact/visit the pharmacy.
- Provides excellent customer service as currently defined by the employer within the scope of the position and within company policy.
- Maintain cleanliness of the pharmacy areas of the store, including restroom, throughout the day. Cleans equipment and containers according to prescribed methods.

- Other duties as assigned concurrent with all applicable laws and regulations.
Education Level: High school graduate or equivalent and licensed through the State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician (certification requirements may vary by state).
JOB RELATED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
· Demonstrated prior customer service skills or experience and an ability to interact cohesively with colleagues in a team environment.
· Ability to preserve confidentiality of patient information.
· Flexibility to work weekends, nights, and holidays, as required.
· Accuracy and attention to detail.
· Ability to understand and follow instructions.
· Pharmacy experience or training preferred.
· Excellent computer, typing, communication, and arithmetic (including decimals and percentages) skills.
· Must be able to lift and carry items, as well as stand for duration of shift unless on break.
· Read and transcribe pharmaceutical information.
· Ability to learn and accurately operate pharmacy computer systems, cash register, and other equipment.
· General clerical ability
· Prior cashiering or customer experience is preferred.
Duties may vary based on state regulations or Pharmacy Management preference. Applicants must be 18 or older and currently possess OR be able to obtain a State of Alaska Pharmacy Technician License.
