Phlebotomist Duties and Responsibilities
Position: Phlebotomist
Position Summary: Responsible for accurately drawing and handling all laboratory specimens that come through the Macon area offices the phlebotomist is working in, and ensuring specimen integrity by adhering to laboratory procedures. Serves as a resource for specimen and testing information. Adheres to departmental policies and procedures to include department programs, quality control, quality assurance, and safety.
Essential Job Functions will include:
· Blood drawing and specimen collection, including non-catheterized urine for culture and drug testing, intended for referral to Clinical Pathology Laboratories Southeast for testing
· Initial specimen preparation.
· Ensuring that the requisition contains complete information for tests ordered, patient demographic data, ICD-9 codes when required, ABN when required, billing, and insurance information
· Maintain a laboratory log or record designating specimens sent to CPLSE and maintaining Standing Orders as well as adhere to all policies and procedures as indicated in the Policy and Procedure Manual
· Inventory and ordering of all CPLSE Laboratory specimen collection supplies, and forms
· Maintaining any CPLSE Laboratory-owned equipment (centrifuge, computers, printers )
· Blood drawing and specimen collection intended for referral to a lab other than CPLSE for testing may be performed only if a completed lab requisition is received and only if a specimen collection charge or handling charge is generated
Education: High school diploma or GED
Experience:
Minimum – training or experience in specimen collection and blood draws
Preferred – two years of laboratory training or experience in phlebotomy
Skills: Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the laboratory and with laboratory clients, and ability to read and write effectively.
